DH and I are getting ready to make some major financial moves alongside our physical move across the country. I've accepted a new job on the west coast and we'll soon be listing, and hopefully selling our current house.
I am looking for someone to talk to locally who can help me figure out 1) what to do with my sizable 401k at my current company, 2) what should I do with my current company stock given the impending split of my current organization into two separate companies and 3) what I should do with any funds from the sale of our house, since we wish to use it towards a down payment on our next place.
I just don't have a ton of time or patience right now to research this stuff. I just kind of wish i could go in to talk to someone once or twice, and then have them handle it all. Does such a thing exist? What kind of fees would they have?
When you say "handle it all" I think immediately of full service investment management- someone who would set up and manage the investments in the IRA (currently your 401K) and make all buy/sell decisions as well as advise you on the other topics you mentioned.
I would expect to pay between 1-1.5% of total assets under management per year, but make sure there are no hidden fees, commissions, incentives, or conflicts of interest for the manager to put you in certain products or trade a certain way.
I would go to a fee only planner and I would look for someone who is a CFP. Always look on the NASD broker check website to see if there have been any serious complaints against them or their company.
