This hurts. I've heard Michael Caibe say some stunning, insightful things in interviews (mostly about his mom and brother - which is a crazy and incredible story). He comes across as so decent and human. Why is it so easy to fall back on this shit?

I'm guessing because hrs felt snubbed so many times he doesn't see it as a race issue but rather a life's not fair issue.

In other words, he doesn't see his privilege
You're right. being insulated by age and wealth probably doesn't help either. I just expected better.
I wish people would stop acting like the only other option aside from white is black. Like, dude, it's not that there weren't any black people. It's that there weren't any POC AT ALL. No Latinos/Latinas. No Asians. No Native Americans. No Middle Easterners. No Indians. Nada. Nothing. Zip. Zilch. Just a sea of whiteness.
And also, nobody is asking the Academy to vote for mediocre black actors over excellent white actors. Nobody is saying snub Benedict Cumberbatch to vote for Ice T. They're saying maybe Idris Elba deserved a nomination as much as or more than Matt Damon.

THIS. Like, I get that strict quotas are obviously controversial. Should you have a POC just to have a POC? Well, maybe. Maybe not. But the point is if there are 10 people just about as equally qualified for something, like an award nomination, and only 5 slots, and you think that 4 white people TOTALLY and without a doubt deserve a nomination, it's not a bad thing at all to consider that perhaps that totally qualified black or latino or asian actor should get your vote for the fifth nomination over another white dude who has been nominated before. Because diversity IS a virtue in and of itself. All other things being equal, you might want to THINK about the fact that all your votes are for white actors.
And the only people saying that voters should be colorblind are white people. Imagine that.

Someehat OT, but if Zahn McClarron doesn't get an Emmy nomination for Fargo, I think I might throw things.

DH and I have talked about this recently since we are big movie buffs and Oscarwatchers. The problem isn't that the categories are too small and therefore PoC are being excluded (something the Academy is suggesting rectifying by making the categories larger), the problem is that there's a huge lack of diversity in Hollywood. The Academy is not the problem. The problem is that they need to make more movies about characters who are not white men. More women, more people of color, and more older characters. I have hope for that last group, just lately. But really, they need more diversity in Hollywood.

No, there's diversity in Hollywood. Plenty of diversity in Hollywood. What needs to happen is the insecure, overly sensitive, white dudes who own all the Industry based conglomerates, need to green light more of our shit, and give more creative control to the POC voices that are sparking the real creative wave vs. the been there done that shitty assed remake after shitty assed remake/ explosive Fast and the Furious 5000/ Lord of the Loki Potters/ Slave narrative/ White Jesus/Female White Jesus dubbed Sandra Bullock/ sad white girl search for self search party tears / Seth Rogen reefer madness/ Tina Fey POC are funny only as the but of jokes in stereotypes flicks dominating the big and small screens.
I obviously have feelings on this issue.
This is what I meant, sorry it wasn't clear. We say lack of diversity, we mean, they aren't making movies about PoC. Specifically, ART movies. They are hard enough to get made, but the few movies that are made for and by PoC are not the type that the Academy goes for. That is what they need to change.
