I spent a zillion dollars on various sippies, only to find the only one he actually uses is the Take and Toss (the ones without the straw), which are like $2.75 for 5 cups.
We started with these Nuk cups that have a silicon spout (very similar to a bottle nipple, easy to transition from bottles). Now we use these Nuk/Gerber cups, and some of these Munchkin 360 Miracle cups. And he uses take-n-toss cups at daycare because that's what they use.
This board is very pro straw cups but my older son could never take a straw. Now he uses regular adult cups. I think I'll try the straw harder this time around but otherwise the only sippy he liked is Nuk.
DS also likes the Take n Toss. I think they are cheaper at Target than Amazon. He does toss them around a fair amount, and so far haven't had any major spills.
He also likes the Nuk soft spout, but I find it sometimes makes a bigger mess when I'm not looking and DS starts playing with the spout. He'll press it down or against his belly, flip it over, and liquid free flows out all over him.

Ditto this. Cheap and they work! And easy to clean. Win, win, win.

Initially we started with the nut like VillainV posted. He liked that but started biting the nipple so I transitioned to the first years.
DS now (17 mos) uses the take and toss w the straws. Super easy and cheap. I tried the take and toss hard spout one when he was a little younger but he made a mess with them. He is better about not just leaving his cup tipped over now.
Thanks everyone. I got a NUK, Munchkin Latch, and a Zoli Bot. We'll see how he does with those and go from there. I kind of balked at a straw cup initially, but if you hand him a bottle while he's sitting up, he'll suck on it without tilting it up for the milk to come out. So, maybe the straw cup actually will work for him. We'll see.
When DS got older we switched to the Playtex insulated because he loved milk and we live in a hot climate. He did start biting the straws off the straw ones, though.
