We luckily got our street plowed today. The plow, though, got stuck right in front of our house on his first attempt to go down our street. So DH and a couple other guys go out to help the driver. While doing this, the driver is telling them about how he'll plow a street and then go back a couple times. He has people who will start digging out their driveways, though, before he's done. So when he goes by again, more snow gets pushed in front, and they get pissed at him!
On this alone, DH and I are both like "Really?". He's there to clear the street. Yes, we've dug out our driveway as much as possible but we're PERFECTLY aware that when the plow goes through, we're going to have to do the end of our driveway again. It's just how it works. Plus, clearing out our driveway really means nothing if we can't get out into the road!
Well, DH just came in from talking to one of the guys who also helped out. His next door neighbor is... all the people who live there are interesting. We've seen the one DD doing drugs in her car and what not. They have dogs who have gotten out and attacked another neighbor once. They park on their front lawn (where we live, this just isn't done and is frowned upon).
ANYHOW - the snow guy stopped and asked our neighbor if his neighbor was insane or "on crack" because she waved his truck down. He stopped, she went up, opened the door and started yelling at him. How she had spent 1.5 hours clearing their driveway and now he drove by and messed it up. He was like "I have to clear the road. I don't know what else you want me to do".
So- he drives off, does another couple rounds - all the while, she's yelling at him from her yard. On his next to last round, she actually got into her car and FOLLOWED him!
What is it about people who don't understand that in huge (not to mention record breaking) snow storms, when the plows come through, they're going to end up covering the entrance to your driveway? Yes, it sucks to have to dig out again, but that's just the nature of snow and having a truck come down and plow out the road! I'd MUCH rather have to deal with that than not have people to come plow out our street at all!
People are nuts. My bil runs the public works dept in his town and his guys had to call the cops when some crazy old man said he'd "blow the head off" of the next plow driver to plow in the end of his driveway.

When you shovel your driveway, shovel out into the road and also more over to the side that the plow will be coming on. Less snow will end up at the end of your driveway once it goes through.

People are crazy. As someone who spent the morning clearing a 4 foot pile from the end of her driveway I feel their pain, but we've come to terms with the fact that there's nothing we can do. Unfortunately, the piles created by the plow are too big for our snow blower. This lady sounds unhinged though.

This is frowned upon here.
Really?! Why? It's brilliant and bothers nobody (in my opinion).

Disagree. This violates the second rule of snow-shoveling, second only to don't shovel your snow onto your neighbor's car or driveway.

I could be wrong, but I think she means to also shovel some of the snow off the road in front of your driveway so that when that the plow goes by, there is less for it to put back into yours. Not to actually dump the snow you shoveled into the road.

Hmmm...I guess as a life-long Minnesotan ive never heard this side of things before and am legit confused why it is bad? It doesn't cause anyone else extra work at all. It's not shoveling anything into anyone's way...we still put the extra piles onto our own property. It's just shoveling further out in anticipation of the plow. Out neighbors all do this too. We are an efficient neighborhood I guess?

Ha!! I see, you all think I meant shoveling into the street! No no, I meant clearing the street right in front of your driveway, with the extra snow going into your already-formed piles, on your own property. :-)

It's a problem because not all streets are plowed. If your asshole neighbors pile more snow into the street it takes longer to clear/melt than if they just put it into their lawn. I mean, why is it that much harder to put it on your lawn than into the street where other people have to deal with it?

Yeah, that is what I think she was saying too. I can't figure out what would be wrong with that.
- Signed the house that shoveled 10 feet into the street today to get to the far left plowed lane.

Yes!!! And that Youtube video above is the perfect illustration!
Maryland. We get snow every winter, pretty much. None of this is new. Most normal, sane people that *I* know get how this works. The main reason we shovel out our driveway is so that the pile is more manageable after the plow goes through!
Ooooooh, okay then that makes sense. I thought you meant shovel INTO the street and possibly all the way across the street (impacting neighbors across the street to have more snow in front of their driveway).
Reading back, my wording wasn't clear. Except in my own head. :-)

Obviously common sense isn't strongly playing into this situation, but I'm legitimately curious as to what they (particularly Ms. CrazyChaser) wanted him to do..? Like lift the plow in front of the driveway, & then shovel it into their lawn? I've spent too many seconds wondering what their optimal solution is
Be grateful your street is plowed, lady. Ours has been plowed ONCE in the past eight storms. But, I live on an old, narrow, colonial street that a regular trash truck cannot fit down, let alone a full sized plow. The city has bobcat plows but they must be delicate snowflakes and only come out in special circumstances.
The worst is when the plow comes along and reburies your dug out car. Worst.
After living in Connecticut where they knew how to get shit done for a blizzard, I'm low on tolerance here in VA.
We live just outside of Richmond. Our apartment complex did zero to pre-treat the roads. They did zero plowing Friday and Saturday while it snowed all day. There is now almost two feet in some spots. They plowed ONCE today. Once. There is still inches of snow on the road with a nice sheet of ice underneath.
My neighbors were shoveling cars out throwing snow in the road after the plow went by. We live in townhomes and have a little lawn to put the snow. But that would require more walking. Easier to throw it in the road.
We had a few cars fishtailing down the street, several cars stuck right in front of our house and I was so nervous they were going to hit our parked car trying to get out. I mean the inefficiency here is unbelievable. Granted this is way more snow than we typically get but talk about making a bad thing even worse.
I'm convinced I either need to live where there is no snow or where people know how to deal with snow. I always hated living in Florida but damn if I don't miss it this time of year.
I agree that the bottom of the driveway is the snowpile of sadness that keeps reappearing but hey, that's life. Everyone knows and just deals with it wearily. I have to say, my neighborhood handled this storm like a boss. 28" and we were all cleared by 1pm today. People were working like animals, even helping each other, which never happens.
