Just before 12:30 I was sitting on my couch watching Downton Abbey, doing an adult coloring book (Ha!), when there's a banging on the front door. H and the kids are upstairs asleep. Another round of banging and I run upstairs and get H out of bed. He grabs our "weapon" - a metal bat and I peak out a window that overlooks the front door (we don't have a peep hole in the door). It's the police.
So I tell H to open the door. FOUR cops are there. They got a call to our house for a domestic argument. But the address was off. We're a townhouse and it was our address but Unit 2. There is no Unit 2.
They can see H is just waking up and I have Downton on pause - clearly no argument happening. The first officer looked at the bat my H had put on the floor before opening the door and said "I see you were prepared".
I'm still shaking. So I guess I'll see if Mercy Street is decent.
As I was posting this they just came back. One of the officers dropped a key. Ends up one of the officers was trained by my cousin and they know half my family. The neighbors are going to think H and I are having quite the argument.
And I feel terrible for the person who is having a domestic and the police can't find them.
That would be scary, I can't see out my peep hole either (they installed it for a 6 foot person). Glad you're ok and it's funny-weird one of the officers knows your family!
Wow, given the call and the baseball bat this could have ended in a really bad way. Sad that it was my first thought
Nope, trust me, that's what kept me up until 3am. Thinking of how badly that could have gone and so, so happy we don't have a gun. Can you imagine? Also, you know, that we live in a nice neighborhood and aren't POC - I think we were automatically given the benefit of the doubt a bit. All I could think was how glad I was that I was awake and had my wits together. H was foggy headed from sleeping and wasn't thinking quite straight. His plan was to just wait in the living room until the banging stopped and they went away (before I checked and saw it was the police). Not sure how that would have gone over.
He also thinks the return visit was the cops checking to make sure we weren't arguing. I took it at face value. I'm sure I'll hear the true story from my cousin (who was the training officer for one of the cops) soon.
