Omg you guys. So I decided to try a new dentist here since I was tired of driving 40 minutes to my former doctor mcdreamy amazing dentist (spoiler alert: I will be going back to him and he's worth the drive). And, as background, my h is terrified of the dentist so I was the Guinea pig since dental work doesn't phase me.
So I went and got a cleaning last month and didn't love or hate the experience. I was disappointed that they used a machine instead of tools to clean my teeth but shrug. Oh and I didn't get a new toothbrush and I thought that was odd. But whatever I figured that's how they roll.
Anyways, I go back yesterday to get a broken filling fixed and holy crap, it was hellish. So he gives me a shot beforehand and as I'm sitting there, I don't feel like I'm that numb but don't say anything because I figure it's probably fine. He starts drilling and OMFG THE PAIN. So he has to numb me again and now I'm too numb (if that's even possible) and can't feel my ear. So I get my filling done and feel incredibly sore and thrashed last night. Ughhh.
Anyone want to share their dentist appointments from hell?!
My worst was when it was two people working on me, even though it was just a cleaning. They seriously both had their hands in my mouth at one point, and I went into a full-blown anxiety attack. Ever since then I've hated going to the dentist, even though mine is good. I'd seriously rather go for a pap.
Ugh also the last time I went the hygienist was typing things in my chart - with her gloves on, which she then proceeded to put back in my mouth!! Gross! If she does that for every patient, just imagine how many mouth germs are on her keyboard?!

Omg how gross!!!! I seriously have never had dental anxiety but if I went back to this place again, I could see myself getting all worked up. My former dentist that I will be going back to always says what he's doing and his staff is friendly and warm so it makes the cleanings/drilling go by quickly and there's no surprises. Ughhh. So glad h didn't do the test run, it would have ruined him!

This is my worst fear!!! I have so much anxiety about going to the dentist! This would probably traumatize me for life!

See?! This is why I'm glad h didn't try this place first. He had that look of sheer terror on his face when I recounted the ordeal to him last night. Oh and did I mention the dentist was like "sorry I'm about to torture you" and I laughed thinking he was joking
I had a cleaning yesterday and it went well, so much anxiety though.
When I was in college I needed a crown and got one. Dentist puts in temporary crown and I didn't realize I needed to go back for the real crown a few weeks later. I never got a call from the dentist to get the real one put in and so went on with life. I stopped going to dentist for about two years because life was busy and I was finishing school, moving etc. Then incredible pain. Go to dentist. The temporary crown had cracked and cracked my tooth in the process. I ended up having to get the whole tooth pulled out. I now have a implant which was a year long process. I get nervous every time I have to go to dentist.
The worst thing that ever happened to me was when I had a wisdom tooth pulled and they used too much lidocaine. I didn't realize I had bloody drool all over the side of my face until I got home.
My DH has a story. One time he went in to have a tooth pulled (I think it was a wisdom tooth), and the dentist grabbed the pliers-looking tool, grabbed hold of the tooth, and put one leg up on the back on DH's chair for leverage as he pulled it out. He still refers to him as "the butcher".

ETA that was supposed to be screaming face emoji but it got changed. What a monster!

Yep, I'd say a screaming face just about says it all.
Mine story is about my wisdom teeth. I went to my dentist to have my wisdom teeth removed. I think that was the first mistake, but I was 21 and my mom set it up for me. I had been going to this dentist for 15 years, my mom used to be a hygienist for the practice. I was numbed, but not sedated like my DH was for his. That may have made the process go smoother. During my procedure, there was an emergency, so the dentist had to leave for a bit of time while my mouth was still being propped open. It was not pleasant, especially since they had to crack two of the teeth to get them out. I can still remember vividly having those teeth pulled. I think the recovery was the worst part though. I ended up having a dry socket and I think having that packed with gauze might have been the most painful experience of my life. Pretty sure it was worse than child birth. Luckily, I have only ever had one cavity and my appointments usually go smoothly.
I had my wisdom teeth removed in college. After I returned to school I developed dry socket. Holy heck that hurt. My dentist from home had a dentist friend in my college town and sent me to see him. I got called right back, got in the chair and told him the issue, he took one look and grabbed his scalpel and sliced the infected portion open with no warning....but it was instant relief. I wanted to kiss him. He also didn't charge me, which made me love him more...ok this ended up a love story and not a bad one...sorry.
I had a similar experience, minus the love story at the end.

Oh my god, I have so many. That experience you had? That's happened like four times to me, with a bunch of different dentists, only WORSE. I'm hard to numb, apparently, and one guy seriously gave me SIX shots before I was finally numb enough to not feel anything. I had another dentist who gave me two shots, started drilling, I yelped from the pain, he gave me one more shot, it still wasn't enough, and he just kept going and was like "well, this is going to hurt a bit, then." That tooth hurt for like six months afterward, no exaggeration. I had one dentist who fancied himself an endodontist as well, and gave me a spur-of-the-moment root canal but left the rubber things that they fill the roots with too long so they were poking out the bottom deep into my gums, and I had to go back and have him redo it because the pain was beyond horrible. Ended up having to pull that tooth a few years later anyway when it developed an abscess underneath it. I had prep done for a crown that was totally screwed up and when they went to take the temporary off and put the permanent on, they shot the tooth with the air and water thing and practically needed to peel me off the ceiling. That ended in a root canal a few months down the road, and they had to drill straight through the crown to do it.
Needless to say, I have developed a pretty serious fear of the dentist at this point, and I haven't dared to go back and even get a cleaning for probably five years. I just can't. They'll have to fully anesthetize me the next time, I'm sure of it. And who would I even go to at this point? I have had at least six different dentists since I became an adult and all of them have been shitty.
You poor thing @thecheshirecat I think you should find a sleep dentist in your area based on those awful experiences!!! Ugh I was seriously clenching just reading about your incidents
@itsbritt thank you for posting this today because had you done it yesterday I would have cancelled my appointment. These stories are so awful.
Ugh, I still have my wisdom teeth and dentist said they have to come out at some point...he said we should revisit once I'm done nursing. Incentive to nurse this one for a long, long time

Sorry this post took an even scarier turn lol!!! Whatever you do, just get out under for your wisdom teeth, you won't feel a thing!!
How could I have forgotten dry socket!? Ugh. I got it after having my bottom wisdom teeth out and ended up calling in an emergency dentist to a hospital on a long weekend. He packed it full of something soaked in clove oil. The packing part was the most sickening feeling I've ever experienced, but then it felt amazing. I remember crying from relief, and my mom telling me I nearly jumped off the chair while he was packing it. So so awful.
Ok so mine isn't' a painful story but a story of caution. I have been to the dentist to have my teeth cleaned every six months for my whole life with the same honest nice dentist. While he decided to be a jerk and retire right after open enrollment was over and I had a hard time finding another dentist that took my insurance. I went to this super ghetto looking place but I figured it was just a cleaning so NBD. I was in the chair and first the dental hygienist starts telling me that I am "legally required to pay for a laser cleaning once a year" and starts breaking down the payment plan. I just looked at her like she was crazy. Then the dentist comes in and tells me I have 3 cavities (I have never had one in my life) and that I may need a root canal on one but good news they could do it all right then. Then they again start breaking down the payment plans. I declined and called another dentist for a second opinion. Dentist 1 wouldn't give me the X-rays my insurance company paid for so I had to pay OOP for new ones but the new dentist was like you have no cavities. THANK GOD i had enough common sense not to let that guy give me a root canal! Its been like a year since then and I still haven't had a cavity. Just a word of caution to you guys.

You probably could/should report that
Oh I totally did. To anyone that would listen really.

I had a dry socket after getting my wisdom teeth out in college. It was so awful. I took heavy pain killers and slept for a week.
I also had a dentist in sit I had a bunch of cavities when I was a kid. I had never had one so to go from none to 5 or whatever made my mom stop the appointment. I went back there as an adult to get info for braces and he wanted like 4k more than everyone else.
A pediatric dentist went off on dd at 2 year appointment for screaming. I was fuming after that one.
