A 39-year-old Atlanta woman killed while vacationing in Grenada was raped by her alleged assailant, police said.
Acting Royal Grenada Police Force Commissioner Winston James met with reporters Wednesday shortly after Dave Michael Benjamin was criminally charged in the case. Jessica Colker and husband Brian Melito were attacked Sunday as they walked on the beach, one day after arriving on the island.
“From the evidence provided we believe that she was sexually assaulted, that she was rape(d),” James said. Atlanta woman killed in Grenada was raped, police say Dave Michael Benjamin was charged with capital murder for allegedly killing Jessica Colker of Atlanta. Police said Colker’s husband, Brian Melito, 62, was not injured.
An autopsy earlier this week confirmed Colker died from “extensive skull fracture and asphyxia.” James said Wednesday there is no clear evidence why Benjamin choose to attack the couple, but people who saw him on the beach earlier said he was “begging persons on the beach for money.”
“That is why he became our chief suspect,” James said.
James said Benjamin “took the couple away” but the husband managed to escape. James would not say whether the accused had demanded money from the couple.
Known as “Giant” or “Shuttle,” Benjamin made his first court appearance late Wednesday morning and was remanded to a prison without bond, police said. Benjamin, a landscaper who lives in Grenada, has been charged with capital murder. He did not have an attorney in court, according to police.
James said Wednesday that Benjamin did not confess to the slaying, as had been reported in some outlets, but was charged based on reliable evidence gathered through investigation.
Benjamin surrendered to police on Monday. Police denied that a blade — such as a machete, cutlass or sword — was used in the attack, despite numerous media reports that Colker was attacked with such a weapon.
The brutal death shocked both people on the island and friends of the couple, who married in November 2014 in Atlanta.
“She was just a beautiful soul,” friend Sara Greene said. “She was such a great friend.”
Greene told Channel 2 Colker loved to travel with her husband and she truly cared about people.
Colker was planning a Valentine’s Day benefit to help refugees, Greene said.
Nurse Cramer had stopped speaking to Nurse Duckett, her best friend, because of her liaison with Yossarian, but still went everywhere with Nurse Duckett since Nurse Duckett was her best friend....Nurse Cramer was prepared to begin talking to Nurse Duckett again if she repented and apologized.
At best, this husband is a coward of the worst kind. But more likely he was behind the whole thing. I'm waiting for details about her life insurance policy to come out.
Well, to be fair, the suspect was also recently released from prison after being convicted of raping a child. So it's not totally unreasonable to suspect him.
I could be wrong, but I believe this suspect was very recently released from prison/jail for a previous crime of sexual assault.
"Benjamin had just recently been released from prison after serving time for sexually assaulting a juvenile."
I saw a photo of where he attacked them - it was a secluded spot not on the main beach. DNA will tell the story, I assume, but the suspect does have a history.
ETA: If I recall correctly, the husband is older - I think he's 65? I could easily see a 65 year old man not being able to fight well against a young assailant.
I he was “begging persons on the beach for money.”
“That is why he became our chief suspect,” James said.
WTF???
I'm assuming the rest of that quote was, "... because he had motive and opportunity to be approached by the victim's husband, in order to contract for her murder."
This whole thing is bullshit and suspect. And JFC, way to stereotype poor people. "He was begging for money, so of course he must be a rapey murderer!"
Well, to be fair, the fact that the suspect was just released from prison for a prior rape charge, and the teardrop tattoos by his eye are not doing him any favors either.
You know the exact Puerto Rican I need to comment on this right?
"Oh that's the one where they were walking on the beach and the guy comes out and kills the woman with a saber or something and the husband wasn't hurt? Yeah seems legit."

He wasn't injured.
ATTENTION MY REAL LIFE FRIENDS! You guys know exactly what to do to my H if I am raped and murdered and that Motherfucker aint injured!!

True. But that's not what the quote referenced when they said “That is why he became our chief suspect,”. It was because he was "begging for money", not because he was a convicted sex offender, which makes a hell of a lot more sense. Perhaps it's just the way the article chose to stage the quotes.
No, I'm with you there. It was a strange way to phrase why he was their main suspect. I'd probably guess that what was unsaid/unquoted/uncommunicated was that the police officer already knew of the suspect and his criminal history, and was just relaying that the suspect was also physically in the area at the time of the crime.
I am not saying that the suspect they arrested didn't do it. I am not even saying this has anything to do with race. Honestly, that part didn't cross my mind because of the racial makeup of Grenada. I am just saying that I cannot see any man leaving their wife behind to be killed. It is just fishy to me.
I told my boss this story and made her promise to NOT GIVE MY H A RED CENT OF MY INSURANCE MONEY, if this happens to me.

Right? Thank you! My DH would have to be beaten to a pulp before he let that happen to me!

something doesn't add up...there's some pieces missing.
Did he really "lure" them away? And where was the husband while the wife was being raped, strangled, and skull fractured? It wasn't like a 30 second burst of rage & she died before the H could do anything. What was the suspect's motive?
Somebody be sure to post an update to this in like 6 months when the full story comes out or there is a book...

She works at the same hospital as several of my friends, it is awful. The alleged killer was nicknamed Giant, so I can see why a physician, trained to assess situations in a calm manner, would choose to run for help, rather than fight. The suspect is a convicted rapist, the husband, a respected doctor, not that doctors are inflatable, but this one went 62 years without a criminal charge or they would be reporting that. The suspect in one article was said to have confessed, and not in another.

You see why this man ran and left his wife while she is being raped and murdered???
REAL LIFE FRIENDS!!! My position stands, yall know what to do to my H is this shit happens to me.
I heard about this yesterday and I was immediately suspicious of the H. I judged the H for running because I'd like to think I would leave any member of my family alone to fend for him/herself. But I don't know what I'd do in the heat of the moment.
I just texted my H about this and he said "Id go HAM. End of the day, either me or the assailant is meeting a horrific end."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^THIS is what a husband does. He doesn't tuck tail and run and leave his wife to be raped and killed, talmbout he was going to get help.
