and i thought it was funny. people *really* don't know *any* mormons? i think that's insane. i had 3 mormon families as my immediate neighbors...as in..less than 4 houses away in any direction....i have several ex-mormon friends (grew up mormon bc of family, and no longer practice).
i always assumed mormonism (is that a word?) was relatively common, just a minority...

There were a few Mormon families in my hometown (~45min N of Seattle), but I don't know any Mormons in Seattle. I remember the Mormon kids had to go to some sort of church class super early before regular classes started in High School, and that they would NEVER have sex before marriage (which was rare in my hicktown) and the girls always got married RIGHT after graduating.
I didn't realize there was such a big mormon population here. One of my friends in high school is a mormon missionary, and one of H's work friends was brought up mormon, but doesn't consider himself affiliated.
FYI: the morning class before school is called seminary. my neighbor and i used to walk to the school bus stop together everyday, until she started highchool, which is when she started going to seminary. i'm not sure what they learn there, but that definitely made the mormons very visible in our school, since they all took a couple vans together to get to school.

One of my old managers was mormon. He was great and we had a friendship. Other than that, I don't really "know" any mormons, but I don't really meet new people very often either and don't work, so that makes a big difference in my social circle.
I know several Mormons. There is even a Mormon church next to the elementary school I went to. If you go to Boise there is a Mormon church on almost every corner.
I'll raise your Mormon dances - which I'm sure were awesome. My brother was so stoked when he graduated from college because he was going to get to attend/plan bachelor parties for his friends. The first one he goes to? Mormon. Needless to say it did not lead up to his dreams.
Ha! Nice.
A couple of 14 year old boys asked me to dance. I was 16 at the time, it felt really awkward.
If anyone's interested on reading what it's like to be mornon I highly recommend this book. The person that wrote it is on NPR sometimes and the stories are hilarious.
Pretty much like a normal high school dance, minus the "lewd" dancing. More of the arms around neck, slowly shuffling in a circle kind of of dancing. And of course, no alcohol.

i imagine full-lighting, as in, no dim-lighting like they do for HS dances?
i miss the swaying side to side dances in middle school haha.

I don't remember the lighting...I do think it was dim lighting, just not as dim as a public school dance.
H was raised mormon, but left the church when he was about 15:
me: can you tell me about mormon dances really quick H: what do you mean? me: like is it like any other HS dance H: kinda yeah 14 y/o + me: w/o grinding and whatnot H: you have to interview to get a pass to get in with a church leader me: dim lights or full lights? H: dim ish me: only god music? H: no grinding, no close slow dancing no just clean pop no religious music me: what was that phrase? H: at least not at ones I went to me: you had to dance so that jesus was between you? H: oh umm something like leave enough room for the holy spirit I dunno something like that me: k thanks
There ya go. That's from a former Bellevue Mormon.

Leave room for the holy spirit, yeah, that was used on us, too, when we were teenagers (not mormon). One old lady put a hymnal between my sister and her boyfriend horizontally, and told them to leave room for the Holy Spirit.
Crashing the thread... I had several Mormon classmate friends in junior high and high school. I remember one day after one of their dances, my Mormon friend Megan was teasing another Mormon friend, Jennifer, about what had happened at the dance between Jennifer and a boy she liked. Megan said, "I was watching you two, and you seemed pretty close... I don't think I could have fit a Book of Mormon between you. Well, maybe vertically!" I asked Megan about it later, and yeah, the rule of thumb was that they were to not dance too close; there should always be room for a Book of Mormon to fit horizontally between the two people.
Now here, I don't know a single Jew and I grew up with tons of Jewish people.
This is so true! I didn't know anyone really who was Jewish growing up (just a few in college), and my only Jewish friends here are from the east coast.

I don't think I know any Mormons. (Although DH used to work with someone who was Mormon years ago). I grew up in the midwest and went to college in Vermont.
I'm sure there are people I know that are Mormon, but I am not aware that they are Mormon.
One of my close coworker friends is a mormon and his form of cussing is saying crap and piss. It's kind of cute/funny. He drinks diet dr pepper like nobody's business. No alcohol so I always try and get his drink tickets at work functions. One time I asked him to use his ticket to order me a "captain and coke, heavy on the captain" and he had to rehearse it so many times bc he never orders drinks. Ahhhh so fun to play with.

My dad was/is a Mormon. He grew up Mormon. I haven't seen him since I was 2 so I'm not sure if he is still practicing. He is one of 7 kids. I am an only child so he obviously didn't follow the religion that well. He has also been married several times. Interesting story... When I was about 3 months old I had a really bad ear infection. My dad was flying to CA to go to a funeral for a family member. My grandparents wanted my mom and I to come too. My mom got wind of the fact that my dad's family was going to baptize me into the Mormon faith. My mom was not happy and got my doctor to say that he didn't advise me flying and visiting family. My grandma was a nurse at the same medical center so she might have helped too! Hmm! I grew up in a town with a large Mormon population. We have several Mormon families at my school. I was in a service organization in high school and there were a lot of Mormon girls involved in it.

So, I know we went to the same hs, just a couple years apart. I guess I didn't know we had such a large Mormon population. Hmm... Funny how different perceptions can be.
My close friend in AZ is Mormon. She's always been really open with discussing their religion in a non-recruiting manor. It was really interesting. She drinks Diet Coke like crazy, listens to pop/rock music, and is actually somewhat liberal politically. More middle of the road, vs far right.
I know there were a lot in my class. Maybe the ones in my class talked about it a bit more. I don't know. I went to Jefferson Elementary. It was pretty close to the church.

One of my BFFs and her sisters (they're triplets) are mormon, and I've known them since we were 10. They're great people, and I love them dearly. I attended many mormon dances, and I think I went to church with them twice... but I was raised Lutheran and thought it was totally weird and decided to stay out of the religious part of it (which they were totally fine with and didn't press it). I also dated a mormon guy in high school... one of the best boyfriends I ever had (aside from DH, duh).
