If there was a threat of a school shooting in your neighborhood? Apparently that is what happened at the high school next to my kids' school on Tuesday. It wasn't reported anywhere and I only just now found out through the FB grapevine. Isn't that something they would tell people in the immediate area around the school?

We had a shooting near our school last week and they automatically go on soft lockdown. Kids aren't informed They informed parents and the public later in the day.
My answer is still yes, i'm surprised you weren't notified during and after.
Nope. The police came and arrested the person suspected of issuing the threat and classes just continued like nothing happened. Same with the elementary school. There was a notice on the police department FB page about an "incident" but it never went into detail.
I think an email at the end of the day from the principal would have been best. It sounds like it was under enough control to not warrant robo calls or emails midday but after all was done an email should have been sent to prevent rumors.
That was exactly what happened. Someone posted in a FB group because his wife texted him wondering if he knew what was going on. Also found out someone committed suicide in the vicinity of the elementary school during school hours the same day.
When the San Bernardino terrorist attack and the bomb threat against the LA/NY schools happened our district sent out an email and robo call assuring parents that we have safety protocols and not to worry about sending kids to school.
I sure as hell would want to be informed if there was a threat against our actual school.

There was a threat like this at our local high school and my kids school was locked down for two hours as was the other schools while local law enforcement investigated. I would definitely be annoyed they did not send any info out.
My kids' school had a lockdown drill yesterday. DS2's teacher told me as far as she could tell it wasn't a scheduled drill and I don't think the timing is coincidental. It makes me so angry that active shooter training is a thing at schools.
Yes, this recently happened at my 1st grader school. Threats were made at high school near by and they locked down both schools and send an automated call to inform parents. Of course parents bitched the weren't called quickly enough since it hit the news first. Apparently they don't seem to realize the news stations monitor police scanners so they are always early with reports. I get being worried waiting for the call but i's rather they focus on keeping kids safe as a priority over notifying parents.
Unless there is an immediate threat of a certain level, they do not always notify parents, because they don't want to incite a panic. It sounds like in this situation, they made the right call. Once the school goes on lock down, then they should be notifying parents, but if the threat isn't enough to lockdown the school, I'm cool with not knowing.

Even after the fact?
I dunno. I think it depends on the situation. A threat of a kid at school shooting, yes, I want to know. A felon in the neighborhood with a gun that creates a lockdown? I dunno. In most cases I would want to know, just because if my kid was worried, I'd want to know so I could talk to him. kwim?
Yes I would want to know. The sitting I work for posts in fb and Twitter when schools are in lock down and when it has been lifted. So many kids have phones and are posting it or sending texts to their parents that it is easier to put the info out there than to field a bazillion phone calls.
Our police department posted on FB this morning there was a rumor of another planned school shooting at another school for today. This is fucking ridiculous.
It's so sad that they are now treating lock downs like it is no big deal, just another day. We had a lock down drill and it scared the shit out of me. If my kids had an actual lock down, I would want to know, just to debrief and make sure they understood and were not afraid of going back to school.
