i've done one retail job, and then i've worked for 3 unique companies. two out of the three, i've held 2 unique positions that required interviewing for, etc.
when i worked my retail job, and then my first company (2 positions), i was firmly company-loyal. then after i bounced around a little bit, (2 companies, 3 jobs), i really learned that leaving/returning has great financial benefits. financial gain is the only reason i've ever left a job.
I had a lot of different jobs when I was younger, can't even think of them all. I left these jobs because I didn't like them
I have had a few longer term ones, a restaurant for 4 years before college and my current job for 5. I quit working in the restaurant to be a nursing assistant and then quit that to go back to school full time.
I plan on keeping this current job until I finish school.
my current plan has been to max out (emotionally, technically, or experience wise) at a given job, and then look for something new. every 6 months to a year or so I poke my head out and see what's out there, and I also maintain a network of contacts in my industry so I get pinged for jobs I might be interested in, etc.
that's panned out to be ~2 years or so per job, and now ~4 years per company. the duration at a company will likely change for smaller companies/more start-up like opportunities.

I worked retail for like 2.5 years as a late teen/early adult. I left for my first office job where I stayed for 6 months (I think, it was a long time ago) and then the small company moved to Auburn from Mill Creek. I was living in Mt. Vernon at the time, so driving to Auburn was out of the question. I got a temp job for a few months until I found something permanent. I stayed there for 3 years until I was laid off. The company went completely under a year or so later. My next job was my first in biotech (meaning me getting laid off was the best thing ever). Oh wait, in between I worked a temp job for 5 weeks at the worst place ever. I stayed at my first biotech for 3 years, left for a little more $, and a shorter commute after Tman was born. I was there for 1.5 years when I left to be a SAHM. After a year and a half being at home, I starting working contract for a third biotech, mostly from home on and off for almost 2 years. I haven't worked since June 30, 2010.
I've been with my current company for 7 years. I agree with Koosh on the stress & pay aspects (we work for the same company). With this company I have had 3 different positions. Left the 1st position because an opportunity to live in London came up. Left London because I was tired of the travel the position required and needed a work/life balance. Still in the 3rd position.
Prior to the current company:
1st job - teacher. Decided I wasn't cut out for teaching went back to get a masters degree. 2nd job - had the job for 3 months. The position was not what I was told it was. 3rd job - Start-up dot com that didn't go anywhere. Laid off. 4th job - Laid off again. 5th job - quit after 4 years as I didn't like my manager. Still with the 6th company.
Company 1: Job 1- HR assistant- got lured away by the marketing group to do events Job 2- Meeting planning asistant- left right before the housing bubble burst and massive lay offs Company 2: Job 1- Meeting planner contractor- left for a FTE position at the same company Job 2: Procurement- hated the job Company 3: Job 1- Sr. Marketing Comm. Manager- laid off because the company went bust Went back to company 2 job 1 - got lured away to my current job for the promise of more money/responsibility Company 4: Job 1- Events Manager- want to leave because I don't like the culture here, love my actual job, but hate everything else Ideally I can leave Company 4 to go back to company 2, job1, but in a FTE position.
