DD1 (first grade) is student of the week and we are supposed to bring a treat on Friday. It can be homemade, but should be peanut and gluten free. Usually they just do a substitute GF item but for some reason the teacher asked for GF....maybe there have been too many snacks in a row that the kid can't have, or something. But it's kind of weird, b/c I know from former co-workers that they wouldn't even try to eat something that wasn't pre-packaged as they were so sensitive and there is hidden gluten in so many things.
Anyway.....
DD wanted cupcakes but that's out. Any ideas for something fun/treat-like but nut and GF and not too messy?
Maybe apples with caramel dip (but apples would get brown unless I make a special trip to take them in at snack time, which I DNW to do with the three other kids).
I think RK Treats are okay and that's all I've got at the moment. Nothing ice cream/frozen, either.
But it's supposed to be a treat-like thing. Like other kids have brought cookies or cupcakes. So she doesn't want hummus and veggies, as nice of a snack as that might be.
It's easy to make gluten free brownies whether it's a mix or home made (using almond flour so as long as the nut free things is limited to peanuts). Haystacks are easy - buy a gluten free cereal and toss with melted chocolate and leave to cool and harden.
Edit: just google "chocolate haystacks" and lots of ideas come up
Enjoy Life brand makes cookies that are gluten free and peanut free, and they're actually delicious. They are in every grocery store around here, either in the health food section or the gluten free section. Maybe you could buy those and decorate them?
*sigh* DD was not excited about the yogurt tubes and really wants cupcakes. I might try the GF mix. I think that even if it tastes bad, she won't really care, as long as they look fun.
Individually packaged rice crispy treats are gluten and nut free. I would go with that over homemade, since the kids I know who are gluten and nut free would not be allowed to eat something home made by anyone other than their mom.
If your DD really wants cupcakes, the GF mixes are not bad, but I would still have some packaged rice crispy treats for the kids who are truly celiac or peanut. You don't have to offer them to all kids, just tell the teacher they are available for those kids who need them.
