In a couple of weeks, a friend is going to be in NYC (She's going to be in Soho) for work and we are going to visit NYC and stay 1 night in the city. For points reasons, it has to be a Marriott.
Our plans include the Natural History Museum and Dylan's candy bar if there's one in the area. We will both have kids with us.
We need to leave our car at our hotel. Are any of these Marriott's going to be in bad/dangerous locations? Is Time Square a "bad" area or is it fine because of the tourists? We are not city people and will have young kids.
If you rec a hotel, please tell me is there is anything else cool/interesting nearby. Any help and rec's much appreciated.
I wouldn't call Times Square a bad area - just very touristy. The subway station that is right there is serviced by a lot of different lines, so in terms of getting to other parts of the city, it's not hard.
If the JW Marriott Essex House is an option, I would stay there as it is right there near Central Park (perfect for kids) and the Natural History Museum is off the Park on the west side. Dylan's Candy Bar is not too far from Central Park but on the east side. I have walked from the east side to west side and found it very pleasant, but you have to like walking.
For a first visit to NYC and with kids it might be fun to stay in Time Square. I don't think I would like staying in Time Square personally, just because it's SO busy and loud all the time. I'd probably rather stay closer to Central Park with little kids. Not for safety reasons, just ambiance.
We recently stayed at the East Side Marriott for a wedding and thought it was very nice, and it was a good rate. It's walkable and accessible to subway. I don't know what the parking situation is, I imagine you can valet park your car.
