I like the Children's place skorts. H & M has had cute shorts in the past, too, but I don't think they were long.
I don't really get long shorts for kids, though. It's just more material to make a kid hot. DD would run outside naked in the summer if I let her. As it is, she spends most of her non-camp time in a bathing suit at the playground (there are sprinklers there), no shorts or skorts at all.
Now, short shorts exposing my thighs is another issue. But that's me being self-conscious. No need to project my issues on DD.
I just don't think wanting shorts long enough to not reveal underwear or a diaper when playing is me projecting body image issues on to my daughter. In fact, I'm sure it's not.
Ps- I think the skorts I suggested covers the issue you're concerned about.
When coupled with your comment about "not understanding" wanting longer shorts for a kid, it does seem to be talking about people other than you.
I don't understand because it's hard to imagine kids who will happily wear whatever their parents pick out for them. I would not choose a battle with my kid who prefers wearing the least amount of clothing possible in summer. The length thing regarding my own sartorial preferences was a random afterthought.
This. We actually do have a a few pairs of those target shorts but they rarely wear them. They're in dresses and bathing suits most of the time.
We were at Target today and the shorts everyone recommends were out. Limited sizing (I saw 12 mos to 3T) and clearly just remaining stock from last year. They were super cheap, like $4.
Last year we did the Jumping Beans knit shorts that are called Bermuda, but they are not actually what I would call a Bermuda short. We also did some of the circo jegging shorts mentioned above.
I had those Jumping Beans shorts for DD last summer or something very similar. Hers were a knit pull-on style and they were called Bermuda but actually they were mid-thigh length. DD loved them. Unfortunately, I think she'll be in a size 8 this summer and have officially sized out of Jumping Beans.
For traditional style twill or denim shorts with a zipper and button, the past few years I have been able to find inexpensive ones in girls sizes in mid and bermuda length at Walmart.
We had a few pairs of knit bermudas from JCP and athletic shorts from ON that worked well. My younger DD's have short legs but are also tiny so they can wear smaller shorts than pants which makes them even shorter in length.

I prefer my kids can play on outdoor equipment with out getting hurt from bare skin on hot slides or getting stuck to swings. An extra 3 inches of inseam isn't going to make them hotter, but it will make it easier for them to play.

I liked Ruum shorts but they redid their brand and the designs are kind of awful. That really sucks, because basically all of her 2T and 3T shorts were from there.
I bought my girls the Boden toweling & stripey sweatshorts last summer. They aren't long but they aren't butt cheek showing like some of the ON/Gap ones they had. I mean I let my 11.5yr old still wear them.

Yea, its a comfort issue to me. I dont want to dig shorts out of my buttcrack, or have to tug them down so they are comfortable on my thighs, so I am assuming my kid doesn't either. Not to mention protecting sensitive skin on hot playground equipment. This is not the same as running around in a bathing suit when swimming/at the splashpad.
Carter's had Bermuda shorts last year. I bought a bunch of the ones spk926 posted as well. We did jumping beans bike shorts, too, but mostly under dresses.

Another vote for the longer Target ones. They went up to size 6x online last year.
My 6 year old is super tall and super skinny. I think she looks adorable in the regular length shorts -- but they are SUPER short. They barely have a two inch inseam. I don't think they're appropriate for school (and they violate the dress code), so she wears the longer burmuda style to school.
Children's place usually has a lot of longer length shorts. DD1 prefers bermuda length, while DD2 doesn't care, and children's place is the only store that I can reliably find some.
ETA: I just looked at their website and there are at least 19 different patterns/colors available.
