How upset would you be? Emma's teacher (9 years old) told the class today she used to be a democrat but is now a republican because when she worked at a poor school and the parents got money from the government they would spend it on drugs and their kids would be out on the street at all hours.
I am dumbfounded. Keep in mind I teach in this district and would like to teach at their school. I also worry she will retaliate against Emma if I say anything.
For the record we have decided DH will email her tonight.

Oh hell no. I would be lighting shit on fire if someone said that to my child. The ignorance she is spouting is disgusting, and as a public school teacher her politics should be very private. I think having your H reach out to her is good. If that is really what she said then I would be escalating it.
I realize it could make things uncomfortable for you at work, but that kind of anti welfare, class warfare has no business in a classroom where children may very well internalize it as fact.
Wow, that is beyond unprofessional on so many levels. I would imagine (hope) that other parents heard of this and will also be voicing their concerns with the administration. I absolutely get not wanting her to retaliate or cause waves in the district, but her comments cannot go ignored. I am glad that your DH is going to say something.
I would be livid. Why woukd a public school teacher feel it is appropriate to share her political preferences let alone that kind of reason for those preferences?
Can your H CC the Vp or proncipal on the email? I don't usually think going above the teacher immediately is necessary bug on this case, I would.

We are questioning this as a teacher it's my biggest pet peeve but I feel like it's necessary in this situation.

I don't normally think going above the teacher is a good idea or necessary but I can't imagine a single response that would make me okay with what she said.
What is she like normally? Have you had other issues?
As a teacher, I would copy the people above her. That is something I would want the higher ups to know just in case she in some way took it out on your kid. I actually would probably think about just emailing her superiors and letting them handle it. But that honestly depends on the culture of your district/school system/school/ what you think the teacher might do the rest of the year.
I send communication via your husband personally. Obviously they know you're involved too, but it seems less obvious for down reason. I'd also probably address it with the principal only or in addition too. I'd probably send two emails because what is want to say would be pretty different. That is awful! I am so sorry for those kids and I am impressed your daughter was able to share that with you so clearly. Good for her!
This teacher is awful. And even though she's not working in a "poor" school now, there is still a chance that at least one of her students gets some form of government assistance. It's just really insensitive.

I said the same thing! I know there is one little girl in the class on assistance.

Not only is the teacher unprofessional to share her political beliefs but also incredibly ignorant and prejudice to make a statement like that. Your daughter sounds more mature than the teacher to recognize how inappropriate her teacher's comment was and to let you know. I agree with going above the teacher because frankly I would be concerned about her treatment of students she deems "poor."
