I'm getting really tired of the Peyton Manning apologists on my FB page, and the Cam Newton hate. There is such an undertone of racism to the whole thing.
ETA - I just called out someone on FB on my page so I'm sure that I'm going to get a lot of white tears about how immature Newton is and how the media going after him for his press conference has nothing to do with how black men are portrayed in the media.
I also think there were some racist undertones when focusing on Cam up to and through the SB. However, even the NFL post-game guys were calling Cam out for just walking out of his presser. As Marshall Faulk put it, he'll look back on that and learn from it as he continues his career.
I'm not saying he should have been whimsical, but even the grumpiest football pros (ahem, Bilichick) will answer questions and give the press their time.

I was reading an article about how Cam Newton is facing a lot of criticism right now for not marrying the mother of his child (who, by the way, is still baby). I sensed a lot of racism in that criticism as well.

I agree that he should have sucked it up and answered some questions, but I can't even imagine being able to answer questions about a huge disappointing loss while I can hear the other team going on about how badly I played. He let his emotions get the better of him, but I don't think he should be vilified for it.

Agree, he shouldn't be vilified. And hold up - he could hear people in the same room badmouthing him? I watched but I had DH yapping in my ear so I didn't hear that.
I really hope he's back, because I do think he brings something amazing to the game. He essentially was the offense through the 2nd half and, against that defense, that's no small thing.

and when Peyton got benched earlier this year he was a giant baby about it. He stopped attending practices and wouldn't even talk to Brock to offer him a "good luck" or anything like that. I feel bad for Cam and I don't know why the media focuses so much on the losers (like the poor dude who was crying last night with a camera right up in his face)

Yeah, there was just a curtain separating the conferences for the two teams. From what I've read, it's a typical setup.

Wait, I like Coloradans - and I chose to leave there, but they are still great people. Even the natives, who probably have some actual reasons to dislike all the transplants clogging up I-70, using all the water, and sprawling into west Kansas.
Seconded. It's the most comfortable place I've lived, and I've lived in a shitton of places.
Whatever. Anyone who doesn't like people there isn't worth my time
I remember when I first moved to Colorado from Vegas and I realized I had finally found my people. Â DH and I periodically discuss moves for his career, and the awesomeness of Colorado always keeps us here.
There's a reason I call it my spiritual home. It doesn't matter where I'm living, where I'm from originally. That's the place I'll return to when I have the opportunity to decide where I live. Nowhere else associates my danskos to the same degree

That's a tough environment.
He should absolutely be able to be assessed for his presser presence based on content alone. His race, however, has been targeted from the moment the Panthers began to establish a winning record. I've heard it almost daily in the predominantly-white sports radio commentary.
If my earlier comment trended that way, I apologize. I was listening to Faulk, Sanders, and Irvin assess his presser right after it happened, and Faulk expressed the most empathy for how Cam was feeling right at that moment (Irvin admitted he had never been in a losing SB presser, but opined on how he "would have handled it").
I can't criticize cam in any way. How many of us at age 26 were at the highest reward in or professional careers? And then to lose that best of the best slot and be gracious about it?
There's no way I could have done that at that age nor now, a decade later.

God knows they put up with more than their fair share of Texans like me invading on a regular basis.
Someone on FB shared a comment calling Cam a "gangsta" for wearing a black hoodie and I wanted to respond so badly, but however the privacy settings wouldn't allow me to comment. The woman who shared it is a PTO mom. :::side eye and shade::::

There was this old guy who had a Buick from the 70's on my block in Colorado that had a stenciled spray paint saying on his huge trunk that said, "STOP CALIFORNICATION OF COLORADO!"
See, Texas isn't really even disliked that much there. But California... keep your higher taxes and social programs to yourself, Californians.
I moved to CO for reasons out of my control, and despite having wanted to leave every single minute since I moved here cannot for similar reasons. As a Californian, I have been mocked and been made to feel like an outsider many times and have never developed a strong social circle here compared to my large group of friends back in CA for various reasons, most being trust.
That aside, and relating to Cam, I can't imagine having my worst day ever and being forced to stand up in front of the world and rehashing it. I mean, even Marshawn Lynch only spoke 43 words after WINNING the Super Bowl. We're not owed anything.

You've wanted to move since the day you got there and can't understand why you're mocked. Ok.
No. I've been mocked because I moved here from California. That's what set off my disdain. I never verbalized wanting to leave until long after that. But seriously, how are people supposed to feel welcome in a state where there are a plethora of bumper stickers that say "no vacancy" and "go home"?
Damn it, CEP! I LIKE PEYTON. LEAVE ONE THING ALONE.
Now I'm off to actually read it.
It's bad. I wish I was surprised, but seems like almost every famous person we want to admire has a skeleton in their closet that causes us to look at them with a new eye. That said, I'm still glad the Broncos won, because Peyton is certainly not the sum of the entire team and hasn't been for the entire season - the defense did most of the work to get them there. (Can I get a shout from KateAggie for MVP Von???)
I'm just hoping Brock Osweiler is still as pure as the driven snow.

That's how you determine how welcome you feel in a place?

I'm sure it was difficult for Cam Newton to do a presser after the loss. This is an expectation of the job though and other players also mustered their disappointment, handled the Broncos next door and acted in a professional manner. I can appreciate that Newton wears his heart on his sleeve and shows hos emotions but he needs to learn to also regulate them appropriately.
Colorado is awesome. Also lol that California is somehow more welcoming. Lol.

I have sat through some BRUTAL post game interviews, often done with only a fabric curtain separating opposing coaches and players. I've seen 300lb huge guys curl up in a ball and cry like a baby. But post game interviews are part of the job, beginning in High School, continuing through college and into the pros. No one makes you be a pro athlete.
Look, I wasn't exactly able to regulate my huge emotions at the age of 26 either. Newton'll get there eventually.

I'm from Florida ffs. I never had a problem. Denver is a transient town. It's days far more about you than a bumper sticker dies about the state.

Honey. It's not us. I can guarantee you that. You've been miserable since you joined the Knot, and very vocal about hating it here. That wasn't long after you moved here.
I've got nothing to lose here since you've disconnected from me in any way possible, so I'll offer this nugget of honesty since you so often insist on brutal honesty:
You get what you give.
When you insist on taking every opportunity to vocalize how much this state and its people suck in comparison to where you've lived and loved, I don't get why you're surprised that we don't flock to you and fawn over you about it. You're deliberately insulting something many of us love and have chosen to be integral to our lives. But there's more...
Though many of us on this board and locally have tried to be your friend, you also insist on declaring very publicly that your only true friends are either not in this state or are your cats. OK then. The smallest infraction can set you off and eternally against someone. OK then.
You get what you give. Please stop asserting that you're 100% victim in this, because you're not. I wish you the best, and I wish you happiness, but you're really going to have to make some personal choices to create it for yourself, because obviously no one else here or across state lines is able to do that for you. From bumper stickers to bosom buddies, you have the power to choose what makes you happy and what is worthy of "FML." Get busy living or get busy dying. Your choice.

9 YEARS of trying to be ksun's friend, and continually being told that you're inferior. Nope. I'm done. Please take your schtick elsewhere. Again, it's not us, it's you.

There's no way I could have done that at that age nor now, a decade later.
Does it suck to lose the Superbowl? Yes. And it happens to someone every year. I don't understand why everyone is giving Cam a pass because of his age--he's not actually that young compared to the bulk of the NFL. Wilson, Kapernick, Brady, and several others were under 27 when they QB'ed the Superbowl. All managed to handle press conferences post-game whether they won or lost.
As someone who grew up playing more than one sport, by high school you have learned to win graciously and to lose graciously. And if you haven't, that says more about your character than about your age, imho.

For me, it's less about his actions in that moment than about the comparisons between Cam and Peyton. The overt and covert racism in the coverage of this Superbowl is pretty blatant.
(and it's not just this Superbowl or the NFL or any other one thing...it's just another thing)
