When we bought our washer and dryer a few years ago we didn't buy the stacking kit. Has anyone done that after the fact and do the after market kits work okay?
Also, anyone have opinions on stacked versus non-stacked? It would be nice to free up some room but I don't know if having to haul the wet clothes up instead of over is worth it.
No experience with stackable, but if you're looking for more room (and haven't already done), have you thought about utilizing the space above the washer/dryer? Either with cabinets and/or a bar to hang clothes?

It's more the floor space for us. We are relocating our hot water heater and it's going to be a tight fit on one side. We could move them but we are getting a new laundry sink and it might be a tight fit on the other side as well.
We did! The wall in our laundry room isn't flat and has a section that bumps out for some reason. We had ugly cabinets and a gross laundry sink that were in there and I realized once we got our pretty new washer & dryer that I wanted to redo things. It was much, much easier to stack our W&D so that we didn't have to deal with figuring out how to do the cabinets across the entire wall and have the doors on the front all be flush. Home Depot had the manufacturer's stacking kit, so there weren't any issues with stacking it (other than waiting until we had enough people over to help us do the stacking).
I'm 5'2" so getting the very last sock in the very back of the dryer can involves some stretching but it's not a big deal. Really, the annoying part is if I want to use the steam feature but the container needs refilled with water and husband isn't home. I can do it, but it involves very high tiptoes and putting the container back in without being able to see. It's usually just easier to have him do it for me. If the thought had occurred, we would have put in some sort of step-stool storage.
I don't find stacked to be any more difficult than side by side, but I am not short.
Sometimes I see people mention dropping things as a con to having them stacked, but even though I am kind of a klutz, I don't drop thing any more often during transfer or unloading the dryer than I did when they were side by side. lol
My personal preference is side by side, but in my condo they have to be stacked as I basically have a laundry closet that fits only the stacked W/D. Dare I ask what a stacking kit is?

When I started googling how to stack my washer and dryer stacking kits kept coming up but everything made it seem like it's only an option at purchase. I'm off to HD tomorrow to investigate further.
