Tomorrow we are going to fill out an application for preschool for DD. They gave me a list of things we needed to bring. One of the things is DHs W2. Are they calculating how much we owe off of that? I always assumed it was a set price. Yes this is the dumbest question I'm just completely clueless.
I would assume yes, but I would ask why they need it first. Do they know you sah? Otherwise I'd guess they need both w2s to figure out payment and I'd really wonder why they only want one.
That's weird and I am not sure I would give it to them. I would ask why before handing it over.
There were questions on DS's public school registration forms that I refused to answer. I just had them mark in his file that if they ever come across a situation where those answers would be helpful they can ask then.

Yes she asked if I worked and I told her that I SAH. She said she needed the w2, birth certificate, ssc, shot records and her insurance card. All of that made sense to me but the w2 is what confused me.

Out of all of that stuff the only thing we have to give is the vaccination records. They don't need all of that. Are in the US? I wouldn't hand over any of that.

I agree. I'd ask and then say you don't feel the others are needed. I've had to provide insurance info, but never the card.

I'm honestly not sure why they need all of that info but it totally makes sense to what you ladies are saying. It is a very good question why they need her ssn. And yes, we are in the U.S.
Unless you've applied for assistance, I don't understand. Otherwise, they tel you how much it costs, you pay. End of story. I would ask first for sure.

I definitely am going to ask before I give them anything. I called and asked what I needed to do to enroll DD and all she said was to come in Monday at such time and bring those papers and she asked if both DH and I were employed and that was basically it.
She may have said to bring it because you may need it to fill out paperwork? Not that she needs copies. You can leave anything blank that you're uncomfortable with and it shouldn't be an issue. Public schools ask for Ssn, but it is t required, I had plenty of immigrant students and many never put down ssn b/c they didn't have one or were concerned about leaving a trail for the government.

I didn't need DS's SSN for kinder. I wonder if it's a state thing?
The only place the ssn came up was on the vax/physicians form when we applied. The w2 is private and makes no sense in your situation. So I would not bring it.

When she asked me for all the papers, I asked her for what reason she needed her SSN and she said "to have it on file." I told her that I didn't think that her SSN was necessary for filling out an application for school and she just said "ok." The W2 she said she just needed to see so they could determine a cost and we would find out in June how much preschool costs. I told her I was okay with telling her how much DH made but that was it but no copy would be made of it. I'm still surprised it's not a flat rate.

I've never heard of that type of system. I would say that I wouldn't be comfortable not finding out the cost until it's too late to apply elsewhere. What if they're charging you more than you can reasonably afford? But then again it sounds like you already applied without knowing the tuition.
I have never heard of a tuition system like that before. We always knew the base cost up front. And I have never provided their ssn or insurance cards for their files. At DD1's school, they have you fill out insurance information on the field trip permission slips because the teacher brings the slips with emergency info with them in case anyone needs medical care, but it is not "in her file" so to speak.
The tuition part seems so odd to me. Like, I would just flat out call them up and ask what is the cost for full-time care for a 3 YO, assuming no financial aid? If they can't give you an answer I would find that incredibly suspect.
DH already told me that we should apply at the other preschools around here because this is already starting off weird.
I absolutely would. I can't think of a single school around here that doesn't list tuition online (except daycares). If they offer tuition assistance they note to speak to the office staff.
That's super bizarre to me that there isn't just a set amount. I am sure there are schools that are a sliding scale but you would think they'd be advertise as such? I'd keep shopping.
I've found schools that won't list the price on the website, but will tell you at the tour or list it on an application form. It's weird that they won't just tell you.
Another vote for weird and try somewhere else. All the schools in my neighborhood provide a price list in person (not on the site) but I would be really not cool if they wanted private info. Agree that a sliding scale school makes sense but doesn't sound like it here.

Oh hell no. They'll tell you in JUNE how much it costs?! I'd look for somewhere else ASAP. I mean, isn't that one of the #1 factors to consider when choosing a school?

Yes, even though it will feel like June will be here in 3 weeks, that's a long time away. I'm calling tomorrow to schedule appts to apply at the other 2 preschools here. I just hope it goes smoother this time around. I feel a lot more educated now because of you ladies thank you!
