to make this MM we are out of money and patience on a big house reno project. We have one small powder room adjacent to the main rooms we have redone. I do not want to pay for tile in this room and frankly it does not need it.
I am thinking of something like the stencil above. We have plenty of paint to still use to make this work and if all i have to do is spring for a stencil and some brushes i can make that work.
i haven't done this in a long, long time, but i remember it being much harder than it looks. however, with a bigger, less intricate pattern you'll have fewer problems with paint dripping and such.
You have to be really, really careful to make sure your stencil is lined up properly. Your starting point should be the center of the wall--most rooms/walls aren't perfectly square and if you start against a wall you might find your pattern leaning after you've painted a fair amount.
Yes, that's how I found out our walls weren't exactly square, so I ended up having to paint over all of my hard work. It's also a pain to get it all all lined up and prevent runs. I'd use stencils again but only for a small job.
If I were doing an entire wall I'd probably just opt for wallpaper or whatever swanky things people use these days.
raangoli is correct and I used that exact stencil! I recommend using a spray adhesive to help adhere the stencil. Definitely follow the directions on cutting edge stencils (e.g., use a dense foam roller, roll off paint on a paper towel).
Using colors w/less contrast is easiest, as is flat paint on top (I used metallic on bottom - the outline part). It is quite time consuming - especially since I did the whole room. The most time consuming part is cleaning the stencil. After several uses, it gets gunky and you need to clean it to maintain a nice edge. If you like the look, I highly recommend using a metallic paint or something similar. I love the way the light hits the outline of the stencil, especially in low/indirect light.
How funny you used this exact one. This is for a small hallway 1/2 bath...very small wall....i am torn between this and wallpapers...others are suggesting a decal type thing too but i think it might look odd.

I've wallpapered and I've stenciled. I prefer the control of stenciling, but I also like painting, so there's that. I think stenciling is ultimately cheaper too (wallpaper takes some supplies). I have no experience w/peels and stick type things. A piece of me wonders how easy they are to apply and whether they would come down easily (even painter's tapes needs to be removed after a few days/weeks).
For a small half bath, have you considered putting the stencil all around the room but starting at wainscoting or chair rail height? You could apply beadboard or something at the bottom. It would be a nice classic look. A piece of me wonders if an accent wall in such a small space makes sense.

This is an interesting idea. I want to paint it white at least to get the color in there out and maybe i will see what that will help me put together.
