I'm giving up alcohol. My true reasoning for this is I am going through IVF, but I am telling people it's a Lenten sacrifice. Three cheers for good timing!
I am not Catholic (or religious at all), but typically do something for Lent.
In the past I've given up pop (which I don't drink any more) or chocolate, or something else.
I think this year I may add something instead, like writing down what I'm thankful for each morning (or evening).
I'm sorry, I meant to include that in the OP. I have a few friends who have adopted the practice in a secular way. I don't think you need to be religious to participate!!

I started a gratitude journal to remind me not to be so negative all the time, lol. I'm also going to start a novena to St. Anthony because I OWE HIM A LOT OF SHIT.

I've taken up art journaling in my Bible here and there, but for the next 40 days, I'm going to try to give up sleeping in and instead journal at least one entry a day. This is one from a few days ago...

Not this year. I've given up most food to continue breastfeeding. I have no more sacrifices to make in my life. I'm trying to connect more with people, so maybe continuing with that.
I grew up in a social justice focused parish, so for Lent I try and DO something. Not give stuff up.
I'm doing a spin on 40 days, 40 bags. I will donate 40 bags worth of stuff. Some used clothes, some bags of food to the food bank, some toiletries to the woman's shelter, etc.

I'm giving up butter. I lov butter and eat wayyyy too much daily. Oh god this is gonna be hard. Now all I'm thinking about is butter. Like putting butter on things. I can't help if it's in something or someone cooks with it and I don't know. But no spoonful of butter on tiny bread just so I can eat butter
I'm ashamed for myself after typing this out. I eat butter like people eat pb

I'm giving up soda, which I don't drink too often anymore anyway, but I'd like to not drink at all. I'm also giving up baked sweets with the exception of birthday cake on my birthday and my son's birthday.
I don't really feel like giving anything up this year, so I'm going to do something instead. I'm going to try to compliment DH in some way each day. I've been really on his ass lately and even though he probably deserves it (j/k) I need to show him I appreciate him as well. I'm not even Catholic or remotely religious, so it's ok if I'm not doing it "right".

Last year I gave up any sort of disparaging remarks about my DH. I'd gotten into a bad habit of kind of sarcastically, humorously trashing him at times for laughs. That sounds terrible, but really it was just a sort of dry humor thing, and being intentional for 40 days about not doing that gave way to giving lots of encouragement and compliments. It was great and I hope you have a great time, too!

That's really encouraging, thanks! I'm glad it "worked" for you!

My plan is to follow Pope Francis and add acts of mercy. For me this will mean praying for others, doing community service (eg volunteering at the marathon, working with homeless), practicing forgiveness, donating to charity, etc.
