What sorts of chores are your 5-6 yo's doing? And do you give any sort of reward/allowance for any of them?
Right now DD sets the table, clears her and her brother's dishes, cleans up after herself, and keeps her room and the playroom tidy. When asked, she helps fold and put away laundry, unload/load the dishwasher, make beds, and other misc. things.
Recently she has become very interested in earning money and having her own money to spend on things (Shopkins, yo). I don't want to start paying her to do the things that we expect her to do as a part of our family, but I was thinking of offering up some additional chores she could do for some spare change. Things that are mainly my responsibility but that I could "contract" out to her, you know? Anyone do anything like this with your school aged child? Tips? Pros? Cons?

Washing the baseboards and trim and sorting diapers are dd's two main money earners. She's awesome at baseboards!
I would only pay for above & beyond jobs. My kids don't care about money yet; but my plan is to have a running list of extra work that can be done if they're so inclined.
But the basic stuff they help with is just part of living in a house and not tied to money.

I would make a list of extra chores and assign a price. My ideas would be: Vacuuming stairs Cleaning cabinet shelves (silverware drawer, etc) Washing switch covers Polishing the front of wood cupboards Dusting baseboards/window sills Watering plants

we have a similar list of required chores and just started offering money for jobs above and beyond those.
baseboards totally!! they can also dust windex mirrors and windows, water the plants, vacuum out the couch with the hand-vac wipe off the kitchen counter clean appliance fronts (like polish the fridge and dishwasher) clorox wipes on all doorknobs

I should add that I'd just make it those extra once a month chores you try to get to but don't very often. Not chores you plan to have her do as she gets older because it'll be hard to stop paying her for things at that point.

DS is 4 (will be 5 in a few months) and he must help clear dishes from the table, empty silver ware from clean dishwasher, carry dirty laundry into the machine, pick up his toys every day. He can earn little Pom poms that go in a jar for a few other things around the house as they come up. Once the jar is full (takes about a month he gets to pick a toy or treat). I don't think I will ever give him an allowance for jobs around the house that happen on a regular basis. He can earn money when he gets older for bigger jobs like car washing, picking fruit, mowing the lawn - stuff that I pay someone else to do right now.
Is it bad that I am looking at every ones lists and thinking, "whoa, should someone be doing that at my house?" Maybe I need a chore chart.
DD1 just turned 8 and her main chores are making her bed, feeding the dog am/pm, setting and clearing the dinner table, cleaning the art table at the end of the day and making sure the playroom and her bedroom are picked up. She also loves to help put away laundry, use the swiffer to dust, watering the outdoor plants (seasonal), and help unload the dishwasher.

I had the same thought. Like baseboards? Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that?? Oh...because I've cleaned them once.
