Yes it's an audible noise. It alerts me when any window or door is opened which is nice now that kids are mobile. Downside is the alert box is in our entry and in the master bedroom which is now the girls room. We are working on disabling that box because I don't want it dinging in their room every time I come and go.
At my previous house I had an alarm system hooked to a company. It would alert if a door or basement window was opened while I was inside the house, and the alarm would go off if those things happened while I was away. I liked it for the security because it was before I met DH and I lived there alone. The only con was that there was only one panel to control it, and it was at the back door. So if I came in the front, I'd have to run through the house to disarm it. So I'd recommend putting a panel anywhere you might come in the house. But I set it off accidentally once and it was crazy loud, which made me feel safe. I think a neighbour would have heard it, even if it hadn't been monitored by a company.
Our current house doesn't have a system, and I wish it did.
We have a system that has audible and it's monitored. I like that if something were to happen to me, my kids can push a button and talk to someone on the other end. Funny story, DH was trying to turn off the voice that said "front door open" etc. when he was throwing darts with a friend late one night in the garage. He ended up setting off the hostage alarm and all these cops came quickly and quietly to our house.
Our system is hooked up to ADT, with both security and smoke alarms. I like that if an alarm goes off, if no one answers the phone they send police/fire automatically. It's nice to have peace of mind when we're away from home, for example, that if a smoke alarm went off, the fire department would be dispatched, rather than waiting for a neighbour to see smoke or something. Also if an intruder set off an alarm, we wouldn't have to worry about getting to the phone to call police; they would be sent automatically if we didn't answer the phone. Also, in case of an emergency, I like that you just need to press one button and police/fire/ambulance will be dispatched.
We don't have it set to chime when a door opens or closes right now, but we might turn that feature on when DS is able to open the door by himself.
We have SimpliSafe - totally wireless! There's a sensor on each window and door and the main control dings every time one is opened. When armed, the alarm makes an unholy racket when one is opened. The main control is not in the keypad by the door so even if someone tried to break in and destroy the keypad, the alarm would continue until they found the main control and cut its power.
Monitoring is optional. We opted out (don't skinsuit me) for many reasons, including necessary police permission, we're on a street of row homes with nosy neighbors (the alarm noise would guaranteed bring out many people), and not so much worried about theft (take my shit!) but truly wanting to know if someone was/could still be inside when we got home. I also was really worried about accidentally setting it off and having the police come to my home and lecture me.
We have its set up through our cable provider and we have cameras. I only arm it when we are out of town or out of the house for the entire day. I have all the chimes disabled but probably will turn them on when baby is mobile.
No, but sometimes I remember to lock the front door? No dog either.
It's embarrassing how many times I come home and realize the back door is wide open.
I come home frequently to my front door wide open. Although that's usually the kids, not me lol! My house was actually broken into while we slept when I was 8, so you would think I would know better lol! We got better about locking stuff for about a year and then slipped out of the habit. I was good when I lived in the city at least lol!
We have used ADT for years and have been happy with them. It costs 15 a month and we have all the doors and windows wired. It can be set to stay when home or away when not home. If it is tripped, they call, if no answer they send police.
