When do you start figuring out what clothes the kids will need for the next season. All these spring clothes in the stores are making me giddy, but I feel like it's only February, what if DD1 has a growth spurt between now and May? I suppose I should make her try them on and if they're tight then I know I'll need to buy stuff anyway. Now I'm not sure what the point of this post is.
Heh. It's 80 today and spring is in full swing! Summer is 8 months long though so I buy spring clothes in her current size and the next size up because she always has a massive growth spurt in late August and it's hot here until November.

We were at target yesterday and dd1 wanted to look at clothes. I emphasized that we were only looking (she needs an Easter dress and sandals, but I wasn't buying them yesterday). Instead I bought her 4 pairs of pants, a dress and 2 long sleeve shirts because they were on clearance. That's a great reason right?
I haven't even looked at her fall clothes, but I'm pretty sure she's got plenty.
I bought 5 summer dresses last fall and she has a few tshirts and shorts. Honestly, she chooses the same few items every week so I'm trying to limit what I buy; she doesn't wear half of it!
Past the first 18 months or so I didn't think it was that hard. They where the same size for much longer and there is more wiggle room. I don't do one big shopping ever, so I guess if they randomly had a growth spurt it wouldn't be the end of the world.
My kids grow insanely slowly I think. DS will wear the same shorts 2-3 summers in a row. He's currently wearing the swim trunks I bought when he was 2 lol (he's 6). DD is wearing last summer's swim suit.
It's been in the 90s here so I pulled out all the summer clothes. All of DD's dresses fit they're just a little shor so she's wearing them with shorts/leggings.
DS will wear the shorts from 2 summers ago again this summer but he'll need new shirts. DD will probably need new shorts by the beginning of summer and will definitely need new shirts.
I agree with Lala though, once they're around 2 it's so much easier to shop.
I buy almost a year in advance. I'm shopping clearance now for their next two sizes. Some they can wear this summer and into winter...some even next summer. The stuff they are wearing now I bought last year. I just always wait and shop the winter and summer sales and stock up then whenever they outgrow, the next size is already waiting them.
I basically just buy the size (by age) that DS is going to be, so for this spring/summer I'll be buying size 3 stuff. I don't think I've ever had him try something on before buying though (other than shoes). Maybe I'm underthinking, though...?

This is me, too. I buy off-season to get better deals. I bought all their summer clothes last year in fall when summer stuff was on clearance. Now that they're older, clothes seem to last the whole year. DD is turning 2 this month, so I bought all her summer stuff in 2T. DS is a tall boy for 4, but 4T is working well for him. The only thing I don't buy ahead is shoes, because those seem to change quickly or skip sizes.
I've also cut way back on the number of things I buy them, especially for summer, because they barely wear half of it. Here, summer is about 3 or 4 months, so their summer wardrobe is way smaller than fall/winter.
Well my oldest kid is much more stable in size so it is easier. I think kids ages 6 to 10 grow 2 inches per year on average. I have a bunch of land ends summer stuff I plan to buy next month. It is easier to buy summer stuff bigger since the length doesn't matter. When she was younger buying a head never seemed to work well for me. I may get some winter stuff on sale in the next size at some sales. We'll see. I keep waiting for her to care more about what she wears to school.
My other child needs only new underware and I'll pick that up next time we're in target. At least one of my kids get hand me downs.

I'm another clearance shopper for the year ahead. Mine have NEVER grown more than a size in a year, so if they are in 4's now and I buy 5's for this time next year it will likely fit. And I am super confident that mine will be wearing the same size this summer as they are right now so if I do find something I want to buy for the next few months (like an Easter outfit), I buy their current size. I also do consignment sales which are in spring and fall, so before the sale, I will go through their clothes and pull out anything that might be too small and try it on them to see if I should keep or get rid of.
I buy a size or two ahead for a good deal - our weather is mild so most clothes are worn year round except maybe the occasional lined pant or fleece jacket. For ski gear I've been buying true to size because buying big in the past just means it's too big and then too small. He's got a little brother and little cousins on the way so I figure they will be handed down.

Oh yeah! Shoes! I also have to buy those as-needed...feet grow weird :0P

I buy the bulk of the wardrobe used, so I'm excited for this bog and nice consignment sale coming up. DD really prefer dresses 24/7 so I'll buy lots of dresses and a bit of shorts, tees, and light pants. I can safely buy one size up these days.
I'm also waiting until my A/S to buy anything for the new baby. I don't even remember how that schedule works but I'll figure something out.

I will say if I had kids of different genders I'd maybe be a bit more conservative about what I buy, but I figure the chances are good *someone* around here will wear it even if it doesn't get a lot of wear by my oldest for any number of reasons.
