It sucks that revelations like that are necessary, but I'm glad they're getting a real understanding of it now. That sounds so awful for T. I can't even imagine.

Your parents' reaction is so similar to the reactions people had when real, live, friends, relations, and acquaintances came out. Hard to hold onto irrational loathing when your old friend Tony turns out to be "one of them."

I think that happens with so many things. Gay rights, sexism. Until it smacks you in the face, you don't really understand or you think you understand, but don't really.

I have a few anti-planned parenthood "friends" who admit to using them for birth control at some point during their lives. But hey, they got theirs, fuck the rest of humanity amirite?
Oh, this reminds me of a guy I used to work with. He is an executive manager who had no empathy towards working parents, and let's be honest, towards working moms mostly. Turns out he had kids not too long ago (he is in his early 40s) and he is the one who has to pick them up/ stay home sick with them most of the time. I secretly hope he realizes what an ass he was.
My ILs had four kids on a low income when DH was growing up. I don't know if they ever received government assistance, but DH talks about how poor they were before FIL went back to school and got a high paying job. So you'd think they would have some empathy for families living below the poverty line and in need of assistance. But nope, they're super conservative and think that people on food stamps must be lazy mooches who are gaming the system.

Both of these are my parents. We used the local food bank and WIC when I was a kid. My mom got birth control for free from our local health department. Yet, they are both very opposed to any kind of social services or their tax money going to provide these things. How could they have forgotten so quickly?
