What you mean memebase isn't a reputable primary source?! thanks, that's really fascinating. I'm kind of flabbergasted that we're spending defense budget on Ron Paul.
Yes, marie, the UC system is broke. Like extremely broke. Like 10% tuition increases every year plus limiting admission and faculty cuts broke. I realize this is a small portion of the budget, and I do tend to be a realist about budgets, but it just seems kinda out of touch ya know? Oh sorry tuition is out of reach for you, we need the money for TV commercials.
Come to think of it, IS there a UC logo? Like if the UC system or the board of directors sends something out, is there a graphic they use? Someone needs to get on that! There are unemployed graphic designers out there!
Seriously, I can kind of understand the mistake, since Berkeley is technically JUST The University of California. As in the "original" UC. Hence being "Cal."
I think this means donors from within those organizations, right, not donations directly from the organization?
This was my read on it.
I'm fairly certain - and someone correct me if I am wrong - that nonprofit organizations (which the UC system is) are prohibited from lobbying and making political donations. That's why groups like Planned Parenthood, etc have action committees which are distinct legal entities that are organized under separate divisions in the tax code - those groups accept money for political purposes and in turn can donate money for political purposes.
So, I think this is referring to groups of employees that give money to PACs. In which case, it's not surprising to me that employees of the UC system are donating overwhelmingly to Obama. In addition to academics, you've got tons of union workers.

Maybe they picked the Cal logo b/c all the money *had* to have come from all of those hippie pinko commie liberals. UCLA would never do such a thing.
Didn't some politician say a while back say that the UC's don't even have a history requirement for their students? When in fact UCSF (med school) and UC Hastings (law school) are he only schools that don't. Anyone remember who that was?
Yay! Pesca is dumb is a way better answer than the state is wasting money.
LOL
The state is always wasting money, so it's a pretty good answer to just about any question. Besides, it's entirely possible that at some point some group got a ballot initiative passed that required the UC system to give money to democratic candidates.
