We still have dd's crib mattress that she used for the first two years of her life. Dh wants to use it for the baby but I would prefer to get him a new one so that is firm (isn't that supposed to be be a SIDS risk factor?). I need to know if I'm being paranoid because we know people who have lost babies to SIDS or if I'm on the right track. What do you think?

I reused dd's for ds. She used it for 2 ish years but it was still really firm and in great shape. After ds finished with it I donated it to the animal shelter. It was a little lumpy and had a tiny tear in it.
If it's still in good shape I think reusing is fine but if it's a bit more worn I'd replace.

Umm ours is going on kid three and maybe bc they went to daycare and didn't nap in it daily or because they got a bed before two, or because they are less than 20lb peanuts, but the mattress looks like new. I didn't know it had a life span honestly.
Without you guys I'd be the crazy offering that mattress to my grandkids...

I don't see a problem with getting a new one. But I was absolutely terrified of SIDS and we had the angelcare SIDS monitor. I know people say it isn't necessary but SIDS scared me so much. So yeah, get a new mattress if it makes you feel better.

I also think this is totally dependent on how far apart your kids are and how long they used the mattress.
We got a new one for our DD because DS's came across the country with us and was looking worse for wear. I'm sure the one you have would be fine, but it's also not crazy to just get a new one. I got DD's on a really good sale at Walmart and it has a really firm side, then a softer side for when she's older. Whatever eases your mind, go for it.

I'm getting an Owl Care monitor! It monitors their oxygen intake through a sock using the same technology used in hospitals. I won a giftcard for $100 from their website.
I think we will just buy another. Thanks for the reassurance. I'm trying not to be paranoid but realistically, being able to sleep at night it worth the money.

I didn't mean to sound flip. Whatever makes you feel better is the right answer. It's a cheap way to feel better about where your son is sleeping. Get a new one! Oh and those sock monitors. We saw them the other day and wow! So neat! Even my dh was like "that's genius!".

You didn't sound flip! I have a friend (another loss mom) who has had her rainbow baby. She is pretty much obsessed with making sure her baby is breathing while she is sleeping. I get it. We know all the same people who have lost babies to SIDS. I just want to be able to sleep at night without so much anxiety.

I only didn't reuse our mattresses because DS was still using his when we had the babies, lol. But we had Angelcare monitors on all three kids and I don't regret that choice at all, especially after DS2's NICU stay for apnea. It's totally worth getting a new mattress if it eases your mind!

That sock monitor sounds awesome! DS was premature and I was completely obsessed with his breathing, so I understand why you want total peace of mind. It's not that much to spend if it's going to save you worry and stress!
Team do whatever puts your mind at ease. We got a new crib mattress for DS2 because it had been over 4 years and I wanted a crib made with different materials. Are the owl monitors available yet? I wanted to get one for my sister expecting in August.
I am currently reusing mine (and now I feel bad because I didn't even think about getting a new one!). She slept in our room for a LONG time though (longer than the other 2 did).

They are available. Currently they work independently and connect to apple products. The new line will also work with androids.
