I dealt with that at an old job once. I started and then there was a baby shower for someone I had never even heard of on our floor. I didn't get anything and made plans to be out of the office during the shower.
Do you know anyone that you could approach about chipping in on a gift?
Only employees I manage really, which makes it a little extra weird.
Yeah, that would be weird.
Do you have a fancy chocolate/dessert place? A small box of truffles and a card might be in your budget. A cupcake shop that makes bride/groom cupcakes?
It's perfectly fine to get nothing. We have these functions for people from time to time and not everyone gives every time. I only contributes to cws that I like or feel close to. Nobody is keeping a tab. And if they are, well, that's their issue.
I'd either just try to be out of the office. But at the same time, if you can't, feign that you have just SO much work, let the shower get under way, then pop in to say congrats, grab a slice of cake, then go back to your desk.
There really isn't a need for you to buy something. I doubt she'll notice or really even care - she doesn't know you either.

I think I'll just try to make myself scarce that day. Plus, even if she did notice/care, it's not like she's coming back?
$5 gift card to McDonald's. My husband got this from his new secretary when we got married. I thought it was a thoughtful gift. Well for my H it was. lol. Maybe Starbucks?
