andwhat, are you here? I drive in and out every day, so it technically doesn't affect me. I just can't believe it's so bad that they literally need to impact this many federal and private workers in the middle of the week.
Oh it affects you Imagine the traffic tomorrow Will they have shuttle buses? They are the worst
Arlington announced increased bus service. I haven't heard about shuttles yet but I imagine they will have them.
They announced it at like 4:45-wapo had it closer to 4. The fed is offering unscheduled telework but I had already left for the day without my computer. Boo!
This is crazy. Shit must be bad. I'm not sure I'm buying the story
I think I've had pretty negative experiences on both and now that I live in NYC, plus have seen how well other systems run in other countries, it makes me shake my head on a daily basis. When will the U.S. get it's transportation shit together?

I much preferred my commute in nyc, but it did have its own set of problems.

If the Metro is in such bad shape that they have to shut it down entirely with less than a day's notice, are they really going to be able to make measurable improvements in one day?
There is definitely more than we are being told here. Something big must have happened.
I don't think anything major happened, just Metro needs some focused attention. Jack Evans is killing two birds...first getting some important safety checks done, but also causing enough disruption that it gets the investment it needs to succeed.

Well I guess that makes me feel a little better
With all the stations shut down here and construction I feel sorry for anyone who isn't familiar with the subway/where they're going. Express trains running local, local trains running express, stops skipped, running over different lines, etc.
It wouldn't be so bad if all trains were automated on the inside or outside to always tell you where they were going but nope, you just pray that you've figured it out or have super hearing that you can understand the muffled mess that occasionally comes out of the speakers.
I actively try to avoid it now. Which is ridiculous given I live a few blocks from a station.
Yup. I'm 4 blocks from one. I use it under duress in the winter when I can't bike, bus, walk or uber. I don't even think it's a real estate selling point the way it used to be (in the District, outside it may be). Almost every DC resident I know commutes in some other way. The only daily riders I know live in the burbs.
Yeah. It's not built for those of us who actually live here. It's practically commuter rail.
in terms of management and parts sourcing? yes, WMATA is worse than the MTA. but NJT is worse than both if that makes you feel any better.
I have a feeling they fudged the numbers when the NTSB recommended safety checks of the power boxes after the last fire 14 months ago, and likely failed to check the cables in question. I am also questioning who they get their jumpers from. we don't supply them to WMATA so *whew* on that one.
