Our almost 9 year old great dane isn't doing good. DH dropped him off this morning to have a very large (and fast growing) mass x-rayed and biopsied. I don't know what we're going to do with results. I've also thought about the possibility of him not coming home today, depending on what they fine. Last night I made story time in my bed with everyone (and the dog) and sort of explained to the kids how mabry is really sick and old and may not have much time left. My 3 year old now keeps talking about how we won't have a pet anymore and how we need a new dog b/c he's old, just like your car. The empathy is strong with that one.
6yo is when our kids got it (7-8 even more so). And it really is so much harder when your kids get it- so, so, so much harder (not that it isn't the worst already). I'm so sorry, I hate that dogs have such short lifespans. I love the floppy eared black dane in your avatar- is that him? So sad- I'm sorry!

Well my 9 year old does it too lol. "When Kitty dies, we can get a DOG!" No, when Kitty dies, Mommy is done with pets for awhile. (My cat is about 17 years old, and has been in kidney failure for about 4 years that's pretty well controlled by diet lol.)

My kids are 8&10 and are have been planning their replacement pets once our cat dies for a while. (She's old and sickly). Meanwhile I'm fantasizing about a pet free existence.
I'm sorry about your dog. It's so hard when our pets are sick.
