Student loans can be deferred. Credit card can be negotiated or dismissed in bankruptcy. The IRS is the government. They can and sol garnish wages, use any refund you might otherwise get to pay back taxes that you owe, seize assets, etc. Of course if you stay within the payment plan you might be ok. They aren't evil and they will work with you to a point, but its not a monkey I'd want on my back.
