Apparently you can get one through the SSA for a $37. The IRS will also provide them at 1-800-829-1040 but they ask that you contact the employer first.
Online? I get my pay stub info and tax info by accessing my profile under the school district website.
Previous employer, so no current employee access/communication.
Did you work for them the prior year? If so, type their FEIN in to the box on the software you are using and see if it is one of the ones that will auto fill with just your name/ssn.
You can get them from the IRS, but employers have until the end of March to file them (the January deadline is to get them to employees only!) so the IRS may not have them yet. If they use a big payroll company they probably got filed already (ADP national files with the IRS when they mail employee copies). Really unlikely to get it quickly without calling the employer.
FWIW, I generally don't know or care who is calling, I just take their pertinent info and get them out. But I work at a place with thousands of employees so I don't know 99% of them anyway to care who calls. Also, the sooner you call the better because holy hell I HATE when people call me on April 13th. The end of March signifies end of quarter and means April is really busy so Ireally don't have time for people's urgent W-2 requests.
There have been a number of requests made that are going unanswered. I'm trying to find out if there's a relatively easy way to circumvent the employer altogether as they haven't been helpful yet and I'm not sure they will be.
Did they do in-house payroll? I work for a small 3rd party PR company and I had an ex-ee of one of my clients that left on extremely bad blood and didn't ever update her address. It was sent to her old address (likely, b/c that is what we had in our system. She was claiming they were withholding it). After I verified she was who she said she was I got our a new W2 to her. Even though we really aren't supposed to talk to employees.
