My guess is that someone said "$32k for a technical position and a few years' experience? What assbag thought of this?" after reviewing the job and he was like "I KNOW RIGHT!?" and is now embarrassed and doubling back on you, and adding levity to it by calling you "Ms. Independent."
I think he's an asshole just for thinking a technical person is only worth $32,000. And I live in a LCOL area. That was basically my starting salary right out of college in southern Indiana. LA? No. Fuck off dude.
And wait. He wants a MASTERS DEGREE? Get out of here with that shit.

That was absolutely a sexist assbag comment.
I'll also add to the list of anecdotes that confirm that salary is absurd. I was making $30,000, in 2004, as a receptionist, with a BA in Psychology from a state school from which I had just graduated. I mean, a good state school, but still.
He's crazy if he thinks you are going to get a tech person for $35K. We hired one recently and a group of my colleagues and I were aghast they wanted to post the position at $75K IMO, it's a low 6 figure job. Maybe lower if you don't have to pay someone to work with lawyers, but it isn't a job anyone will do for $30K. Is that even minimum wage?
However, because he is the boss, I would apologiz and tell him you will be more diligent about flagging things like this in the future. And then do it. Because the employee never wins when going head to head with the boss; if he is an asshole, your remedy is to leave.
I'd probably go in the bathroom and flip the bird at the stall door a lot to get out my aggression before going back to calmly say something like "I will be certain to confirm all the details before the next posting."
I feel like that's half of my job lately - making sure I manage HIM and his expectations. Sigh.
That is like half the job of anyone with a boss or a client. The other half is managing your direct reports' expectations. The third half is substantive work.

Were other people cc'd on the Ms. Independent comment? My ex-boss was like that and I started just sending his approved emails to others involved or cc'ing them.

Managing up is a huge part of Manager/Director level jobs. It's a learned skill for sure. It used to drive me crazy that I was essentially reminding constantly but it's the only way to allow informed decisions around the big table.
