Tell me about Asheville, NC as a vacation spot. My husband has suggested going to Asheville for vacation this year. What are good things to do with kids. There will be 5.5 and 1.5 at the time of the trip.

I lived there for 7 years and had two kids. It is a fun place to visit. When are you thinking of going? I'd suggest:
-just walking around downtown, if it is summer bring their swimsuits. There is a fountain for kids to play in right in front of City Hall. There is a coffee shop in a old double-decker bus.
-Biltmore, kids might get bored on the house tour, but there is a farm area like pp said. You could do horseback riding there too.
-Ditto PP, there are great hikes in the area.
-also, there are zipline places, places to go rafting or river tubing, the Nature Center is good for younger kids. (check out adventure center of asheville)
Biltmore- a day trip. Kids may be bored at the house but the barn and animals would be fun. They have carriage rides too around the estate which is fun. Nature Center- a fun and easy kids activity. It's small and very manageable with little kids. Very affordable too. There are some indoor stuff we like to do too- there is a new trampoline place that I want to try. This is fun for an inside activity- www.mountainplaylodge.com/ This is outside Asheville but fun- handsonwnc.org/ There are tons of outdoor activities but we haven't done much since the baby was born. Maybe soon though. There is a railroad outside of Asheville that sounds like fun. They have a dinosaur train theme going on I believe- www.gsmr.com/ Lots of good restaurants. Depending on when you come there always seems to be a festival of some sort in Asheville or around.

I forgot about Grove Park Inn. It is worth it just for the view and to show the kids the giant fireplaces.
Bluegrass is not really my thing, but we used to go to Shindig on the Green. They have a dance area at the front just for kids. My kids LOVED it. It is fun to watch the dancers on stage too. www.folkheritage.org/shindigonthegreen.htm
Went a few years ago pre kids. There is (was, hopefully they still do it) a drum circle on Friday nights in the square. There are a few chocolate shops that are fun. We really loved the place. I think the French Broad Chocolate Lounge was the one we really liked?
We went there as part of a bigger road trip two years ago. We really liked Chimney Rock and the Arboretum. The Arboretum has lots of great trails for kids to run around.
Also nearby: Stone Mountain, Blue Ridge Parkway (this was our favorite part of the trip), and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park (we focused on the waterfall hikes and easy hikes since I was 8 months pregnant but it was still lots of fun)
