What are you reading this fine fall Friday? (No, I'm not crazy, it is autumn in Australia.)
QOTW: Have you ever been to a Murder Mystery Party? Or a literary themed party? (Question prompted by my thoughts of having a literary scavenger hunt party for my birthday this year.)
I'm still slogging my way through The Cider House Rules. The chapters are stupid long, and I hate that.
I hosted a Murder Mystery when I was in college, and people were kind of into it, but we were too young to drink (freshman) and it was at my parents house, so it was more subdued than it could have been, which would have made it more fun. I also made my H go to a professional one (wedding themed) that I bought on Groupon as a date night - it had terrible food and my H didn't like having to interact with a bunch of random strangers. It would have been more fun if we'd done it with a group of friends instead of as a couple.
I just finished The Nest, which was excellent. Now in the middle of a couple of re-reads: Jasper Fforde's Lost in a Good Book and Ruth Ozeki's A Tale for the Time Being.
I'm about halfway through "A Letter of Mary" (Laurie R. King). Once I finish that, I'll probably look for something to read towards my challenge (expanding my reading outside romances and mysteries).
And my gift to my fellow readers, a quote from the last book I read ("A Monstrous Regiment of Women" Laurie R. King) ... "I crawled into my books and pulled the pages up over my head..."
It's rainy here and I'm working a half day, so soon I'll be crawling back into my own book.
QOTW: Nope, never have. With friends, I'd be OK. With strangers, I think my inner introvert would take hold.
I'm currently finishing up Armada. I don't think I like it that much, but I'll wait until I get to the end to decide for sure. It certainly doesn't have the same magic as Ready Player One.
I'm reading The Guest Room next and Morning Star will be available very soon. So many books to read - I need more time!
QOTW: I have always wanted to do one of those murder mystery parties. Your birthday party sounds like so much fun!

I am currently reading Radiant Shadows, which is book #4 in Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series. I am liking the last 2 books better than the first two. I'm getting ready to start a reread of The Raven Cycle in preparation for The Raven King's release on 4/26.
QOTW: Never been to one, but it sounds awesome. I would be stoked if I got invited one, especially literary-themed.
TGI friggin' F. It's been a crazy week and I'm so excited to have a weekend here.
This morning I just finished My Name is Mary Sutter. I had super high hopes for it, and I loved the characters and overall story (historical fiction, Civil War, midwife wants to become a doctor when women weren't allowed to do such things) but something just felt off- I almost feel like it wasn't edited correctly. At times it felt all over the place and give way more detail than necessary on ancillary characters. I'm still deciding how to rate it.
I am still finishing The Martian, and even though I saw the movie first, I find the book so suspenseful and well written.
I just started listening to The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian and it's good so far. I've decided he's one of my favorite authors for not just beautiful writing but dang he has a lot of breadth. Each novel has been pretty different, and I like that he's not predictable.
QOTW: Yes, I have and it was a blast. I did it as part of a team building event for work, and the theme was an Old West murder, so the person that hosted had a room set up as the Saloon, one as the General Store, and whatever other sets there were and we all dressed up for our parts. I had way more fun than I'd expected and it was very unexpected who the murderer was.
I am in the middle of Doll-Baby by Laura Lane McNeal. I'm enjoying it well enough. I also started The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North, which is just weird so far.
I'm about 70% through Lost in Her by Sandra Owens. Nothing amazing, it's a cheap Kindle romance series that I read whenever a new one comes out. I needed a break from Jane Eyre, which I'm 30% through.
Up next is either Bird Box by Josh Malerman or The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker or a Little Women reread thanks to the other thread.
I just finished Blue Lily, Lily Blue on audio. I have Richelle Mead's newest ready to download as well but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I will but I might go back and relisten to the third Cormoran Strike novel. Or The Martian. Or Madame Tussaud. I haven't decided yet.

andddddddd I want to come to your literary themed party!!!!
I just started Blue Lily, Lily Blue. I'm sad that I couldn't get a hold of the audio version through the e-library because I did the first two on audio and loved the narrator.
QOTW: Nope, but I'd totally be down with going to one.

I'm reading Murder on the Oceanic. It's a re-read, but from 10 years ago and I don't remember that much about it at all, so it's really be like re-discovering a gem on my bookshelves.
QOTW: No, I haven't ever been to a Murder Mystery Dinner/Party or a literary themed party, but I really like the idea -- which is why I'm planning a scavenger hunt party for my birthday. I was hoping people wouldn't think I was crazy. All my friends are readers, so it's not going to be too foreign to them.
I just started Girl on the Train. I like it so far.
I went to a casino-themed mystery party about 8 years ago in a historic mansion/event center for a friend's birthday. I remember the casino part and sitting around a table as the hosts lead a discussion around the room but honestly can't remember the storyline or how things turned out. I remember having fun.

You didn't ask for advice, but I liked The Golem and the Jinni a lot more than Bird Box if you're still trying to decide. Of course Little Women is always good.

I hope I managed to quote correctly on the app.
Thanks for theadvice! I have been trying to decide. I'll read TGATJ first.

I just finished Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. It was okay. I don't feel the need to read the next book. I am starting Me Before You now.

I started reading Court of Fives by Kate Elliot. It's started a big sluggishly with a lot of world building but seems promising. I'm also still reading Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne.
I'm listening to Red Rising by Pierce Brown. I doubt I will finish it before book club on Saturday. I'm a little less than halfway through and finding it interesting.
Human Remains, Elizabeth Haynes - I really really enjoyed Into the Darkest Corner so decided to pick up this book of hers and so far it hasn't captured my attention like the other but it is still interesting. I am liking it.
Horns, Joe Hill - I was really into the beginning of the book but once the book started talking about the back story it started to lose me fast. It sort of keeps droning on and I am ready for it to be over now.
I have never been to either type of party. I want to do a murder mystery one though.
