Any books coming out this year that you're excited about?
Do you typically pre-order books or wait until they come out to buy?
I love to pre-order since I have Prime and get release day delivery.
I pre-ordered and received the new Nora Roberts book The Obsession yesterday and I'm looking forward to reading that. Other than that I've pre-ordered the illustrated HP and the CoS.

I'm really excited about the latest Ashley Gardner Captain Lacey mystery. I have it pre-ordered for my Kindle and should get it May 17.
There are a couple other series mysteries I'm waiting for, but I read those with my mother and she has them ordered in hard copy (though not necessarily hardcover). She'll mail them to me when she has read them.
Most other series mysteries/books I read, I wait until they come out in paperback because (1) the rest of the series on my shelf is paperback and I hate to have mismatched series on the shelf, and (2) I'm pretty cheap when it comes to buying books and am on a pretty strict book budget.
I am pretty excited about my latest Amazon order, but most of the books I ordered are the latest series episodes I need, though not necessarily the most recent. I have 15 books that should arrive on or before April 21.
I have The Cursed Child pre-ordered. I'm not sure if I am excited or not though! It's more like I need to know what happens but I hope I'm not disappointed.
I'm super excited about Empire of Storms and A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. I plan on doing a re-read of the whole Throne of Glass series sometime this summer to get ready for Empire of Storms.
There's a new Louise Penny due at the end of August, so I'm excited about that. I don't have a lot of my list yet; I'll have to start looking at what's coming up.
I almost never buy books, but I get on the library hold list and usually can get books on release day or a day or two later.
I have Prime, too, so if there's a book that I want, I'll usually pre-order it. That way, I don't have to think about "Is it out yet?"
Right now, I have the next Louise Penny, HP and the Cursed Child, Donna Andrews' Lord of the Wings (I have all hers in paperback, so it's the release of that I've pre-ordered), and a couple of romances on pre-order.

I enjoy preordering on my Kindle. It's one of my favorite features ~ preorder a book and Viola! There it is on release day.
I've already preordered The Raven King (4/26), Warrior Witch (5/3), Empire of Storms (9/6), and Crooked Kingdom (9/27).
The Raven Cycle and Malediction Trilogy are wrapping up, so that's exciting. I can't wait to see what's next for Aelin, Manon, and Dorian. And Kaz better get Inej back in Crooked. I think there will only be the two in this series, so it's almost guaranteed.

I'm so excited for Raven King later this month. Definitely one of my favorite series. I also have The Cursed Child pre-ordered for when that comes out this summer.
I'm really looking forward to Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh. I loved Hyberbole and a Half and I hope this one is just as good. It doesn't come out til October though.
I think I'm going to read the new Rick Riordan series, Trials of Apollo. That comes out it May. I like his books enough to keep reading them but I'm not going to rush to read it. I'll probably wait for it to come in from the library.
I don't keep up with what's coming out when anymore either. But I am looking forward to The Raven King. I don't usually pre-order, since I get most of my books from the library too. I'll put myself on the hold list at the library pre-release though, just to make sure I get it early.
This year the new releases I am looking forward to the most are (in order of release date):
The Roses & the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater * The Last Stars by Ricky Yancey The Thorn of Emberlain by Scott Lynch A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir Empire of Storms by Sarah Maas * Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews * The Fate of the Tearling by Erika Johansen *
All of these are the next installments to a series. Whenever I finish reading a book in a series that I intend to continue reading, I just look for the next book on Goodreads and add it to my 'next in series' shelf if it's already been released or add it to my 'not yet released' shelf if it hasn't. This way I find it easy to keep track of all of them since it seems like every book is part of a series lately.
* = Will definitely read THE DAY it comes out and will pre-order it
I think the last book I actually pre-ordered was HP and the Deathly Hallows, and then I regretted it because I had to wait for it to show up in the mail on release day instead of being able to buy it at 12:01am.
For cost and environmental reasons, I try to get most of my books from either my amazing local used book store or my library, but I'll definitely buy HP & the Cursed Child new, and probably GRR Martin's The Winds of Winter new whenever it is finally released (if ever).
Speaking of getting books exactly when they are released, I just realized that JK Rowling's Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination is out today! Is anyone going to read it?
Is it bad that I've stopped really following JKR? I feel like I should turn in my library card with that statement, but it's true.
Have you read the Cormoran Strike books that she published as Robert Galbraith? I mean, I assume you at least know of them, but just in case...
I really like them but they're definitely different than HP.
I also liked The Casual Vacancy but I can more readily see why people wouldn't have liked it.
ETA I see this was already addressed if I had just read a bit further. The Cormoran Strike books are way faster-paced and draw you in more than Casual Vacancy. I loved the audiobook versions.
aurora, I had the same problem, but I think it was either Order of the Phoenix or Half Blood Prince. I was getting more and more pissed the later in the day it got when my book wasn't showing up. I think it finally came at like 5 pm (Amazon handed off delivery to USPS and all the extra deliveries delayed our already late arriving mail). I could have just walked into Barnes and Noble and bought it that morning. Assholes.
I tried to pre-order the Little House on the Prairie annotated biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder, but they didn't print enough copies to fulfill all the orders and it got cancelled. I ended up getting it from my library and saving myself $25.
I'm not making any promise, but I did at least add the first to my TBR.
I never finished The Casual Vacancy, but I was bored to tears with what I did read. I haven't tried anything else.
Ya I agree that Casual Vacancy was not the best but I really like the Cormoran Strike books. They read quick and the audio versions are good too.
I feel like the problem with the casual vacancy is twofold: it was the very first book after HP and it was a standalone. I feel that she does a series better. I personally liked it but I recognized a lot of the characters from my small town.
I think the second in NR's newest trilogy is slated for a June release. Other than that, nothing I'm excited about unless there's a new Strike novel coming out this year. Which I sincerely hope does.
Empire of Storms - Sarah Maas (Throne of Glass series finale) The City of Mirrors - Justin Cronin (The Passage series finale) The Last Star - Rick Yancey (Fifth Wave series finale)
