Some people really shouldn't be managers. I hate how in some companies, it's just a natural progression as you gain seniority.
Good for you for being proactive and very deliberate and wise about each step that you're taking. I hope HR is able to help both of you find a better work environment for your skills/personalities.
This is so frustrating. Everyone agrees with you but appears to tip toe around him. Someone is going to have to tell him bluntly what he's doing, how he comes across and maybe give him an improvement plan. We actually had that kind of happen to a manager once and he did improve. But it was uncomfortable for a bit while he processed it and tried to figure out his response. Biggest problem - he really didn't see himself that way so he had to get over his ego.
Perhaps most awesome was he told his team that he went home and discussed (probably ranted) the feedback with his wife and she basically told him it was accurate and he should probably start by apologizing to the team, thanking them for the feedback and promising to do better. Poor guy
Ugh. It sounds like they need to fire his ass and let him learn a lesson that way. You don't get to just treat people however you want. Part of his role as a manager is to manage people in the way that best suits THEM. I guess they have to cover their tracks by trying to coach him, but damn. I'm sorry you have to deal with him.
HR told me "Well we need to escalate this and based on all of the feedback we've gotten, we need to ask ourselves if this is the kind of person we really want as a Sr Director at this company."
He should be in biz dev, NOT managing people.
Have you talked about the Peter Principle in your MBA program yet? We learned about this in my first Econ class and it's really surprising how much it explains about workplaces.
Basically, you do well at your job, so you're promoted to a new role based on how well you do at a different job. And you stop being promoted once you're bad at your job. So everyone is promoted to his or her level of incompetence.
I'm sure you've already thought of this, but keep as much as you have in writing as possible and keep copies in case you do need to file for unemployment (hopefully you'll get a new job and it won't be an issue). I'm not sure how CA works, but you can't typically get unemployment in OR for quitting unless you prove some extenuating circumstances which it seems like you definitely do!

Sounds exactly like a Biz Dev person, they are (mostly) terrible managers. Sorry this is happening to you. Good luck in Vegas!
Yup - great at relationship building outside the company, but should not be leading internally!
I worked for one that was great on the business management side, but if he was a total asswipe when dealing with people (internally or externally). My last week of work involved me skipping lunch one day to meet with Corporate HR (not our subsidiary's HR) because someone had filed a complaint with them about him. My favorite was their faces when I told them I had to lock up and log who took what from the supplies so he could bill them (that wasn't policy) and that he regularly called me an idiot in public.
I'm glad you talked to HR. I had a similar situation with a boss years ago and kept reporting all his BS to HR and he was eventually let go and 10 years later I'm still here. Have a great time in Vegas!!
Wow, that is an amazing update. It's unfortunate that it is so unheard of to get results like this, but I'm so happy your HR and higher leadership are coming through! Hope positive things keep coming!
