I went to WDW over the weekend for the Star Wars Dark Side challenge. I ran the 10k on Saturday and the half on Sunday. I was supposed to run the 5k on Friday as well but had to change my flight and miss out because of a meeting.
I will be the first to admit that I undertrained for this one. I feel like I have had one illness or injury on top of another ever since my last RunDisney weekend back in January. I also had a nasty stomach bug Monday- Wednesday, so yeeeeeah. I was a little wary of how I'd do.
10k morning- it was humid. Of course it was. We were just hoping the rain would hold off for a couple hours, but it was sticky and I could feel it. I was averaging close to 12 minute miles, which is awful. I'm typically closer to the 9:30 range, but the humidity was really taking its toll on me. I felt sick and lightheaded by the halfway point. Finished in 1:21, a time I am not proud of at all. :\
Half morning- So much better. I think it was 10 degrees cooler and it didn't feel *as* humid. I knew I had undertrained and decided to stick with 4:00/1:00 intervals at a slower pace, and it really helped. I felt great right up until the end. I finished just a smidge under 2:35. I had hoped for under 2:30, but alas, not this time. I'll get there.
Totally wound up running next to someone right before mile 12 who had cut the course from mile 5. I really wanted to say something snarky but decided not to waste my energy.
The medals from this weekend:
Feel pretty good today overall. Not nearly as sore as I had expected. Getting myself back on track now that I'm feeling healthy again finally. I am NOT happy with my times.
Congrats on finishing. We're all going to have those not-so-great races but you finished and get to add more bling to your collection!!
How do you know they cut the course?
That portion of the course was on a parkway. It was an out and back, kind of. One side of the parkway was heading toward Animal Kingdom, and the other side was heading away toward the finish. I had been running with the same group of people for 6-7 miles, all of us from D or E corral. Somewhere between mile 11 and 12 we passed a bank of portapotties that were in the median of the parkway, accessible to both sides of the course, and then shortly after that we came across this woman wearing a bib from corral L just strolling along at a leisurely pace. The other side of the parkway had the back of the packers and the sweepers right behind them at the 5 mile mark, so it was easy to put 2 and 2 together.
She wound up sitting next to me on the bus back to the hotel later, so I looked at her bib number and checked her out her results. No 10k or 15k split. Her 5k split was 53 minutes, and her total time was 2:19.

Great job! I ran the half and DH ran the challenge. We were a couple of corrals back from you and there were lots of bottlenecks, but the weather Sunday was fabulous. I didn't have my best time, but mostly because we stopped so DH could get pictures, but I had a great time!

It was fun, wasn't it? Everyone seemed to be in a pretty good mood. It seemed like no matter where I was, people were talking about the races and were happy to be there. The costumes were all fun to see. I stopped for a few photo ops too.
But yeah, there were portions of the course that were snug. I got into the corrals early both days to try to stay toward the front and avoid as much of the congestion in the Epcot area as I could.

stephm0188 it was fun! I spectated the 10k Saturday on the Boardwalk and it did look very crowded but everybody looked like they were having a great time.
