Would you get an IUD if you knew you were going to try again in 1-2 years?
We've always just done NFP so the idea of any birth control terrifies me but so does an accidental pregnancy right now. I can't do anything hormonal because of my migraines with aura. We've had sex a few times now doing pull and pray...and I just don't think I trust my prayers enough right now
Based on my personal research and lifestyle I would not. IUDs, like any other BC method, have their pros and cons. For us the cons outweighed the pros and we opted for NFP. We also use condoms as back up during the fertile window.
We were doing pull and pray. And now I'm 9.5 weeks pg. So I think I'll look into IUD after this. I was on birth controls pills for years but didn't realize how bad the side effects were for me until I was off them then back on again.

I wouldn't.
Have you talked to your OBGYN about a diaphragm or a cervical cap or just using condoms and spermicide foam? There are other barrier methods too. Just about any of those would be preferable to P&P.
I would, but I love my Mirena. I had one for 18 months between my kids. DH offered to get a V after #2 was born and I told him there was no point because I will keep getting a new IUD every 5 years until menopause. I haven't had a real period since 2011. I spotted for a few weeks after having it inserted, but no other issues.

I use a cup so I wouldn't be able to do an IUD, plus I prefer my pills because my periods are much lighter and less painful, lol. But in your case, I probably would unless something less "permanent" would work for you. We also use condoms to be very very sure, lol. I actually don't mind them, less mess

I would do something besides P&P if you are sure you would not be ok with another pregnancy right now.
We are likely done after this baby (I could go for a 3rd with a minimum of 2 yr gap, preferably closer to 3...but DH says we are done and has asked for me to have my tubes tied so I'm sure we are done). My current plan is IUD until we decide further. I will not be tying my tubes if I have a RCS but he is more than welcome to get a V.
Condoms? My DH hates them and refuses but that's the route I would go if it were an option.

I have migraines with an aura and have done the mini pill our entire marriage. We couple that with p&p during ovulation to be extra safe, but I'm very diligent with when I take it so I'm sure I'd be fine otherwise. We just don't want any surprises. Have you looked into that?

No I haven't looked into that because both my last and current Gyn said no BC without signed consent from my Neuro, and my Neuro said no way. I guess I could ask about this specifically, especially since it's safe for breast feeding.

When you said you use a cup, do you mean a menstrual cup for periods? If so, are you also saying you can't use then with an IUD? That would be a deal breaker for me. I love my cup so much

Yeah that one should be fine. There is no estrogen in it and that is where the risk for stroke comes in.

Yes I actually went to a Mommy Con session about them because my friend was curious about them too. Someone asked and she says it's not recommended because I think it could potentially pull out the IUD? That was about a year ago so I don't remember specifics but something like that. I think her website is called "put a cup in it" or something like that, she probably has info on there!

I guess it makes sense since the suction can be really strong. I'm SO glad you told me this before I got one. I'd hate going back to pads and tampons for this.

Right? Now I know why people recommend them so highly... they are amazing! I don't ever want to go back, lol

I've known too many people who have had bad experiences with IUDs so for me it's a no. I was on the pill for years, years, but 3yrs ago had Norplant put it, I just don't know if it's hormonal though. The side effect I got from it was extended periods, which SUCK because it'll last on and off for a month, then I'll skip a month or two and get it again for a month. That's not typical for everyone though.
I would be hesitant to get a non-hormonal IUD unless it was my only option, because when I researched them there were a lot of reports of heavy and prolonged bleeding as the main side effects. I don't know if that's still the case, though, because it's been a few years since I did any research on them.
Hmm my OB recommended Paraguard for breastfeeding because she thought Mirena might affect my supply (but I had oversupply so that might have been nice). You do typically have heavier periods. Basically all of the nurses I work with use IUDs with no issues. I don't use a menstrual cup though lol. Maybe I'll cave eventually We just used condoms for a few months and then decided to discontinue BC when DS was 6 months since I'm not fertile anyways.

This wasn't one of my reasons for not getting an IUD but I am adding it to the list of cons. The cup is awesome!
I like ThirdandLong's suggestion of a cervical cap/diaphragm & spermicide too.
Yes, and I have. When I had it put in, I knew and DH knew and my OB knew that I may be back to take it out in a year or two.
I love love love my mirena. It's hormonal though (very low, but I understand neuros and risk) . Paraguard is the non-hormonal option, but that I have no experience with.
We have been using condoms as our primary birth control since we got married, 5 yrs ago. Before that I was on BCP. I will not go back on BCP until after we are done having kids, coming off of them messed my already messed up cycles and we are not willing to risk it until after we are done ttc.
