I just finished a Chet & Bernie mystery, The Dog Who Knew Too Much. It was fun and a very quick read. I'm also reading The Genius of Birds, nonfiction about (you guessed it) birds and different ways they demonstrate their intelligence. Next up for fiction is another Thursday Next re-read, Something Rotten.

I'm reading The Moor (Laurie R. King), a mystery. And I have A Tree Grows in Brooklyn but haven't really started it yet. That's my next "challenge" book, so I'd better get off my duff!
And I don't really get influence by news in my reading. At most, I might pick up a book that there's a lot of buzz about, but even that seems to be rare.
I'm finishing up a trashy book #4, the first book was free and then I bought the sequels. The writer definitely got better with her characters by the 4th, but so not worth buying it, lol.
I have Rebel.Yell downloaded and should start reading it today. I had it before Jackson $20 bill news.
Not usually, but sometimes world events pique my interest in an author or subject.
I am chuckling a little that this trashy book series is so bad that they're not even worth naming!
Trashy smut books are my go to when I need something light and easy. I don't even like to list them in my goodreads.
Yeah, sometimes I wish I could hide them from my GR friends since some of them are IRL friends. But I list them anyways because I read enough non-smut that they shouldn't judge me lol

I feel the same way about the Amish Romances I read on the Kindle app when I can't get back to sleep in the middle of the night. They are my secret books, and I list them on GoodReads but I can't bring myself to discuss them with anyone in real life.
I do love the ease of concealing what you're reading on the Kindle.
I'm almost done with listening to Red Rising by Pierce Brown. I'm still struggling with it. I really want to like it, but I'm still having a hard time getting into it. I don't think I would have finished it if it weren't something I was reading for book club.
I'm reading HP3 for a re-read.
QOTW: Not usually.
I wasn't a huge fan of Red Rising, because it felt like the author took all other dystopian YA fiction and threw it in a blender to get his novel. And I haven't read Morning Star yet, but I actually liked Golden Son better - the second one felt significantly more original and I felt like the author had gotten more experience and the writing was higher quality.
Thanks for the tip. I might give Golden Sun a try in a while. I have to take dystopian breaks or I get really burnt out on the genre.
I finished After You this week and just started Life After Life. I am not sure about Life After Life, I am having a hard time with it.
QOTW: No
I had a hard time with Life After Life too. It took all of my will power to finish that one. I don't like to not finish books (I've only ever put down 5) but this was a real struggle.

I wanted to like this series since I usually enjoy the dystopian genre but I just didn't care for it. Red Rising was okay. Not great but I liked it enough to finish. I couldn't make it through Golden Son though. I read the first half but it took me weeks and after that I gave up.
I brought Ilium by Dan Simmons with me on vacation to Cancun last week. Didn't start it until the trip back. It's HUGE and SLOW and there are only 11 days until book club meets to discuss. Think I'm on page 85 of 700. Might have to buckle down and just schedule myself for an hour's reading before bed every night.

I'm still struggling through it. I am not enjoying it but I feel the need to finish. I agree with you, I do not like to not finish a book.

I want to start contributing to these threads, but always forget to look on Fridays!
I'm listening to The Preacher by Camilla Lackberg and will finish it sometime this week I think. I'm also reading The Death Cure by James Dashner that I also hope to finish up this week. I'm reading the whole Maze Runner series for a reading challenge I'm doing, but I'm ready to be done with it. I still have The Kill Order to read, but I may take a break and read something else. I'm over the whole YA/dystopian genre right now.
QOTW: I don't change what I'm reading due to current events, but it will sometimes influence my to read list.

We've always had responses trickle in into M/Tu of the following week.
(Also, feel free to check in on Thursday evening because dorothyinAus often starts them on her Friday, which begins a lot of hours before most of our Fridays!)

Something she has been willing to brag about, on occasion.

The downside is my Mondays begin earlier than everyone else too.
Trashy smut books are my go to when I need something light and easy. I don't even like to list them in my goodreads.
LOL, my confession is that most of my reads are free trashy/smut/romance reads that I get free on my Kindle... and that's why I removed myself from Goodreads. I don't want people knowing exactly what I read.

LOL - I pay for mine, but a lot of what I read are "trashy romances" (said with great affection). It is one reason why I don't deal with Goodreads. Another being that I have so many books in my eLibrary that just trying to organize them all is daunting.

I am re-reading The Handmaid's Tale. It's been several years since I first read it, and though I enjoyed it, I'm already getting way more out of it this time around. Maybe it's because I'm older and these "women's issues" are affecting me more and more each day.
ETA: And I just finished Insurgent. Which apparently I've read before (says GR), but I honestly don't remember anything from the book, and it's so unlike the movie, that wasn't any help either.
