Have any of you tried it? I've been watching a lot of videos of people reading their results of YouTube. I'm fascinated and kinda dying to give it a whirl. Most people are surprised at the results.
I really want to do this or 23andme but the stuff I've read about privacy (especially with 23andme) has made me very wary. It was enough to keep me from doing it. I don't like the idea of losing control of my genetic information or it becoming a product that companies can sell to others at any time.
The ancestry.com one will break it down to 26 regions of origin. Since I'm 99% sure that mine will come back as 2 different regions based on what my research has shown going back well over 400 years, I don't see the point for me personally.

I did it and I feel like I could do one of those commercials. My parents knew very little about their families and all we were told was that three grandparents were of English descent, and one grandparent was of Irish descent. My sister did the DNA test first and it came back that we were 47% Irish and only 3% British, the rest being German, French and Spanish. Believing it was wrong, I sent a sample, as did my other sister, and while waiting for the results, starting tracing my family tree on Ancestry.com I quickly found several Irish relatives and a great-grandmother of strong German descent. My own DNA came back with slightly less Irish and slightly more British. It also links you to others who have similar DNA results (odds being anywhere from extremely close to 4-5th generation close). It found 2 'extremely close' relatives, those being my sisters. It also found a very close match, who turned out to be the son of my Mom's cousin, someone we didn't even know existed. There are other close matches, but I haven't reached out to them yet.

Well, it's based in Provo, owned and operated by members of the church, offers free services to lds members, collects data for their baptism by proxy database....
My H did Ancestry pretty recently. His mom is pretty sketchy secretive about her past.
MIL's mom was 15 & unmarried upon having her, so has always been pretty vague. (This was practically unheard of, according to her, back in the 50's.) The man who was her "dad" growing up (fathered 3 of her siblings, 8 half-siblings ) became super into the Jehovah's Witness church, & GMIL ended up kind of running away, back to her hometown with just MIL, who was the oldest.
Sorry for the detailed (semi-unnecessary?) background; I'm just trying to give you an idea of the unanswered info H was trying to find.
He'd always been told GMIL was 100% Iroquois Indian, but the results showed less than 5% Native American. He shared with his brother, but is hesitant to share with his mom...
Anyway, it was definitely worth it, in his opinion. He was very surprised & the results made him interested to continue his personal research. I really don't have too much interest, as my family is pretty detailed in their records, at least for the 20th century. If you have any interest, I definitely recommend giving it a shot. It was certainly enlightening, but absolutely led to more questions than it answered, if that helps...?

Ohhhh Ancestry itself. I had forgotten that it's run by the Mormons.

My SIL just used it and raved about it. The results weren't exactly what she expected, but she's thrilled she has that info. She even located a long lost cousin and they've been keeping in touch.

My Aunt was 15 and pregnant, back in 1951. My grandmother had to go before a judge in order to allow my Aunt to marry her 17 year old boyfriend. For what it's worth, both my grandmothers were pregnant when they got married, back in 1918 and 1926.
I've traced my family tree pretty far back so I don't feel a need to do the DNA portion. Finding out the who is more interesting to me than the where. I'm starting to explore becoming a certified genealogist but there's such a monopoly on genealogical information by the Mormon church that I don't know if I can get past that.
I did find out via Finding Your Roots that I'm related to Derek Jeter, which is cool but awkward.
Well my dad is an Iraqi immigrant and my moms grandfather immigrated from China, his wife was Native American and my moms limited info about her dad is just that he was mostly German. I'm curious about it but it's kinda pricey and the whole Mormon church thing is weird.
My dad did it but the results weren't surprising to him since he's pretty much traced our geneology back to Adam and Eve. I think mostly English and Welsh.

My grandmother was pregnant when they got married in the 1950s, not sure the exact year.
I think it's really neat to have this info but the whole sharing your info thing makes me nervous.

ALL OF THIS is why i wont do Ancestry.com stuff.
screw the mormons and their baptizing the dead shit
They agreed NOT to baptize Jews AND THEY DID IT ANYWAY! Fuck that.
My sis is a geneticist and she says don't waste your money. It's going to become cheaper and more informative in the coming years and also they need to hash out their legalities. Many people can get satisfying info from Ancestry.com, or the like, which uses info that's already public record.
I'm really interested in my ancestors, I'm the one who did our family tree, who has the most old photos and my grandmother's bible with some family history info. So it seems like this would be up my alley. Yet, for reasons I can't quite pinpoint, I just can't just get it up for this. Maybe because I do know the last few generations back on most sides and either way, I don't see this giving me any information to which I'd feel a connection?
I have a friend who gave one to her son for his birthday. He's adopted and it linked him to his birth aunt who went to his birth mom who had not shared news of the pregnancy with her family.
It's all good now; they've met and such. But it was tough on the birth mom who kept the secret for 20 years.
