We have fast growing, deeply rooted weeds that are taking up residence in our shrubbery. I'm not sure how to rip these suckers out since I can't get to the base of the weed, especially in the dense thorny bushes like the barberry we have around our patio.
I have the same problem under a mutabilis rose. I *think* there is a grass killer for use in beds that won't hurt shrubs, but i haven't looked to see if I can find one yet.

I'm sorry, just chiming in to say I feel your pain. I have some "demon weed" that is growing from around the base of my azaleas. It's a vine that propogates like CRAZY and I can never seem to get the root up. Good luck!

Yes, I had the same type of issues with my azaleas. Wild grape vines, honeysuckle, etc., etc. RAGE
This winter, when things were dead, I trimmed away the low branches on the azaleas, and then dug everything out by the roots and mulched deeply. In the spring and summer, there was just no way to get in there.
