We're building a custom model with a builder; we've probably spent the most time on Houzz browsing for ideas.
It felt a bit overwhelming at first, thinking of how many selections we had to make, but working with the builder using a timeline sort of broke things down into pieces and made everything pretty streamlined. We basically had a sort of colour scheme/palette in mind for the whole house, and that helped to narrow down our selections when it came to flooring, wall tile, countertops, paint colours, etc.
Houzz basically gave us ideas on details. So when we were working on selections for a certain room, we'd check Houzz and see what kind of things we liked. In our powder room, for example, we ended up deciding to do sconce lighting on either side of the vanity mirror because we liked how that looked.
It's been a fun process so far, and we're really looking forward to seeing the finished product!
