Update 2: The officer just called me to clarify a couple of details for the report. He said she's done this "several times" and she is coming into the station today. He'll update me again later. So, I no longer feel torn. She deserves what she gets.
Update: DH wanted me to call the police and talked to his friend who is a sheriff's deputy to make sure it was valid. So I called the police and they've already been here to take my statement. He's going to talk to the owner and get a copy of the receipt. He's also going to send the information to the prosecutor and let them decide if they want to press charges since I was torn. I'm not sure if she's over 18 or not. The officer will keep me updated and call me in a bit after he sees the owner. We're in a small town of 5k so I guess the cops were not busy. The officer also knew the owner by name and where he lives, lol.
This pisses me off so much. I ordered pizza online Monday night. I was horribly sick with a bad sinus infection and home alone with DS. We rarely order delivery, but I wasn't going to pick it up or cook in my state. I paid online with my credit card and tipped the driver in cash. I still had to sign the credit card slip and so I wrote "cash" on the tip line.
The charge posted to my card for $5 more than the total. I called and talked to the manager and he said he had the slip in front of him and I wrote $5. I stopped in to look at the receipt and it's not my writing or signature at all. It was so not even close, my first reaction was to laugh. This girl must have printed a new receipt and wrote in a $5 tip (on a $19 order) and signed my name.
They gave me back the $5 and apologized. But I'm pissed. This girl committed theft and forgery and the dollar amount shouldn't matter. I'm sure they'll fire her. I wonder how many other people she's done this to and gotten away with it?
When I was a server at Ruby Tuesday in college (LOL) we had two servers fired for a scheme where they would print an extra receipt any time someone ordered just the salad bar and a drink because that was a really popular order AND didn't require anything to be prepared by the kitchen. Then, the next time someone ordered that, they wouldn't put it in the system and would just give them the extra receipt and pocket the money when they paid. Apparently they got away with it for awhile.
That sucks! I like to go over my credit card receipts because twice in the past I have seen money added to my tip. I usually add 15%-20% for tips, I don't skimp on these servers, so it made me so made to see a couple extra dollars added to the total on my credit card statement.
Ugh, I'd be so pissed. I always save restaurant receipts intending to verify the charges to make sure someone doesn't screw with the tip, but I almost never do. I really should, though, because it's so easy to change.

When I owned a restaurant this happened a few times, and I thankfully caught most of them before the customers and fixed them. Everyone of the servers got fired, too. I despise thieves. I am hyper vigilant about my receipts now.
I would be really pissed, but I never double check tipped receipts so I'd likely not notice. I really should check them. I don't really go out much so it shouldn't be too hard.
I am paranoid about that. I take a picture of my receipt when I get delivery. I had a driver steal my card number and ran up thousands before the bank cued it. They hate it when I ask, but that's one of the reason I love my iphone, I take pics of everything.

Wow! I cross through the tip when I give cash for this reason, only because of a former roommate who was a particularly large jerk did what this girl did and thought it hilarious enough to share. It sounds like you didn't even get the receipt though. I agree, they should have refunded your entire order.

My cousin's boyfriend and his friend worked at McDonald's a million years ago, and they did something similar. Something like if anybody ever paid with exact change, they would just pocket the amount and not even put it through the system. I guess no one ever noticed they never received a receipt? Lol. I know they pulled this scam for what seemed like forever - I mean, I was only like 12 and even I wondered when the eff they were going to get caught.
This is a good reminder to doublecheck, which I never ever do. How sad that we have to though.

I would be very disappointed in the restaurant's response. They should have refunded your entire bill and given you a gift card. As a former business owner, I would be falling all over myself to appease the customer in this case.

You had to drive all the way there and all you got was the $5 stolen from you? Um, no.
Ex-H and I booked a room at a local casino resort for our 5 year anniversary and it came with a $100 credit. We used the credit on dinner at the steakhouse there. The bill came to right at $100 and then ex left a cash tip. The next day when we were checking out, they said we owed them money because we charged the tip to our room. When we explained we paid a cash tip, they sent us to breakfast (for free), while they checked into it. They figured out something was up pretty quickly, were extremely apologetic.
I had that happen at the Cheesecake Factory about ten years ago, I left the tip in cash in the little folder thing ($10 on a $50 bill), and put 0 in the tip line, I even wrote "on table" - well, I noticed on my credit card statement that I had been charged $60. I called the restaurant and they put me in touch with the lady who handled their books. She looked up the original receipt and the 0 and my note had been scribbled out, a new total had been written in, AND the guy forged my initials next to the change. Made me really mad. I emailed over MY copy, and they were horrified. They gave me a $25 gift certificate, refunded the meal, and promised me that server would be dealt with.
If I've learned anything from TV and country songs it is that if you live in a small town, you DO NOT do anything illegal or bad because everyone will know about it.
At minimum, this time of stealing the $5 will stick with her.

In college I had a few friends who worked at Olive Garden and would keep every receipt for Soup Salad And breadsticks and a water and reuse them and pocket the cash. That was a big thing. It had a code name.

When I worked at the Olive Garden years ago, the soup, salad and breadsticks were put together/ plated by the servers. It would have never occurred to me to not ring up the sale & pocket the cash for myself.
I did snitch a few bread sticks from the bread warmer, though.
The owners response was atrocious, and this is horrifying. I am not sure, though, that I would be able to follow through on prosecuting a teenager for stealing $5. It would be one thing if they were going to prosecute her for stealing from dozens of customers, but . . .

This is where I'm sitting.
I absolutely would have contacted the store, but it never would have occurred to me to contact the police over $5, and certainly not prosecute unless, as elle said, there were multiple cases.

That's what I told the officer too. I don't know if she's over 18. I told him if she had a history of doing this, she needs to face the consequences. If she doesn't, I don't want this to hurt her future and I told him that. But that's up to them to look up her history and the store owner was going through receipts last night. The officer said he'd call me today so I'll update if there's any info.
I'm surprised how often this seems to happen! I don't think I would have necessarily gone to the police but I would absolutely demand more compensation from the place!
