Help me buy furniture for the boys new room. L is 4 and C is almost 2. Currently they sleep together in a full bed. SS is 10 and needs all new furniture. I'm thinking of giving SS the full bedroom set and getting L&C either 2 twins or twin over full bunks. The only issue is that I know twin beds won't last until high school and fulls are usually only $50 more. But space will be tight with two fulls in a room and I'm hesitant about bunks anyway.
So many choices I don't know what I want!!! Please Tell me your set up and what you like/dislike, or what you would do.
Non-bunk option: We were at ikea this weekend and they have trundle beds - that way there's no bunk bed, but it also doesn't take up the space of two beds except for when they're sleeping. Maybe there is a full-size trundle bed out there somewhere?
I shared a room with my sister until she left for college and I was in 10th grade. We had twin size bunk-beds. When my sister was 13 and wanted more privacy we moved the beds in the middle of the room as a "room divider". My dad put up a board across one side of the bottom bunk so it was a solid divider. Then we each had our own dresser and desk on our own side of the room. This or having two lofted beds when they're older might work?
When we moved a year ago, the kids were still in their toddler beds/converted cribs, and we decided around February it was time to get out of them. H wanted them to have full beds, but they weren't ready to separate - they like sleeping in the same room. So we went with two twins. I reasoned that by the time they are in high school, they will need new beds anyway, so we will buy fulls when they outgrow the twins.
I slept in a twin bed until I was 20! I didn't know any different whereas H always had a full or queen to himself growing up.
Also in 10 years more than likely your step son will be on college so you could just get bigger beds then. I like to have one full bed for guests though.

We went with twin bunk beds which unbunk to 2 twins. Right now they are bunked and C (6) sleeps on the top bunk and R (4)sleeps on a (separate) toddler bed. Our theory is that when they hit high school and want bigger beds they will need less floor space to play but right now more floor space to play was more important than planning 10 years down the road.

I really like the trundle idea, but I'm not sure what size mattress fits in there. I definitely want a normal mattress, not a thin version or futon type. I'll investigate that more. The trundle to add to the current full size bedroom series only $150 so that would be he cheapest option.

I think all 3 boys will be pretty tall, but twins would probably last until age 10-12. Right now SS has a queen at his mom's. He got our queen when we got a king last year, but that was to be temporary. I hope he isn't too spoiled by having a queen!
The only issue with bunks is I'm worried about L falling out. I'm so torn!! I think I need to see the bunks and trundle option in person and check if the bunks separate or not.
I've been looking into bunk beds that can separate into two beds, and also trundle beds. I think we've decided to get Xander and Genevieve a bed with a trundle for now, she gets the bed he gets the trundle. Then get bunk beds when the kids are bigger. X scares me with his climbing and I don't really want him falling out of a top bunk.
ETA - You can also look into twin extra long beds/mattresses. That's what my college had so you get the length but don't have to sacrifice the floor space. They don't need the width, really. A full is the same length as a twin...only the queen and king are longer by several inches.

shevacc that chart is great! I guess twin/full aren't much different and queen/king is a luxury they can have when they pay their own bills ;-) I think I like your idea of trundle now and bunks in a few years.

I'm debating looking for a set of bunk beds with a trundle that also can be separate beds. Depends on if I can find something reasonably priced. Then I can just buy beds once and start with the beds separate, only using 1 bed plus trundle, then later bunk them.
We are doing a mini loft bed for A with a floor bed for H underneath. In 2-3 years when #3 is ready for a bed, he/she will get the mini loft and the boys will get bunk beds that can separate into two beds. All of the kids will have twin beds unless we move to a house with bigger bedrooms. I'm not sacrificing storage for sleeping space :-)
