We built two places, and in both instances, we nixed the boob lighting. lol I have always called them that too. In lieu of boob lighting, we went for tons of recessed lighting.

We rent and the vast majority of our lights are ceiling fans with lights attached. We do have one boob light that we hope to replace with a ceiling fan as that will be the baby's room when he or she gets here.

I wanted new light so I bought a cheap boob light, but ultimately all the lights in the house will be replaced by decorative fans (with lights) and recessed lights as the renovations continue.
I hate boob lights.
ETA: Track lighting is also good. So are pendent lights. If you want good recessed lights but don't want to pay a ton, Lowes sells them by the case of 6. It's what we used. I think we paid 20? or 30? for the case of 6. They are 6" though, but they work and look nice. They just nail into the beams instead of screw in.

The lights in the halls are these ugly globe things that have been there since the house was built in 1986 (sorry can't. Pip from the kindle). We will replace with can lighting eventually.

I have several Marianne Brandt/Bauhaus style globe lights. They are classic, modern and totally affordable (Like under 30$ each).
Our LR has flourescent lighting undre a valance, and lamps. The kitchen has a flat sqaure light with copper box, and a hanging pendant light in red art glass. The basement has pot lights.

jehc, I think you should buy builder's lights for now, and replace them later with something you love. That way you don't end up spending extra cash on something you only sort of like, and end up replacing in the next two years anyhow.
So, let your H win today, but bank this card for later.
