I would wait and see for the summer. I've heard they expect it in some places in the US this summer (I feel like southern CA and parts of FL were listed), but they don't know for sure.
I would make sure if it actually gets here you both watch carefully for symptoms and get checked out to confirm if you have it or not.
Ok, first, I think you being concerned about this is totally legit. I've just spent a week in east Texas in jeans in a long sleeved jacket spraying all exposed skin on myself and DH every 6-8 hours with a consumer reports top rated mosquito repellent, and it's not even mosquito season yet. Of course, I might have turned the corner from "concerned" to "paranoid", but I'm ok with that :-)
As to your question, all I can offer is to talk to your doctor (and/or ob) to get their suggestions, and keep tabs on your department of health website. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably try to time everything to avoid the height of mosquito season, but as we've established, me=paranoid.
ETA: and if you guys do decide to wait until fall, I think they are still suggesting all preventative protocols for the summer, which means lots of mosquito spray for everyone

I'd wait until the Fall because being newly pregnant in the summer was the worst thing ever for me. Between the heat and being sick I hated every moment of it.
Yeah, I know people will notice if I'm not drinking. Since I will be able to have the MaterniT21 (or similar) testing this time, I hope I will feel comfortable sharing earlier on. But that's still 10 weeks in. I also get bad food aversions during the first trimester, and the thought of not feeling well at Thanksgiving makes me sad. lol. Plus being tired and unwell and having to do Christmas.
I totally get all these concerns that you listed here. I was so sick over the holidays this past year and it was a pain to try and hide. I did share with my parents around 5-6 weeks so they could help me hide it a little better from the rest of the family, but it was still not fun. BUT, I'm glad to have gotten all that out of the way. When it comes to holidays and family events, I feel like there is no perfect time to be pregnant.
This summer, I'll probably not be outside once it starts getting dark. My H is a paranoid freak about Zika even though there have been no mosquito-born reports here (outside Chicago). I would definitely have a conversation with your doc about this, though.
I've thought about the same so you aren't alone. If we have another I will be in Louisiana and I feel like there isn't a time where there are no mosquitoes. I've been thinking about it, too. Even to the point of it possibly nixing the plans for a 3rd.
That is a lot to think about and I'm with you about tempting fate. I agree with you that getting a sense of things from your OB would be good. He might calm your fears about zika

I agree with the above @tambcat.
I hadn't heard it might come here. We get maybe 2 bug bites each a year and they are usually spiders. But damn now I feel so itchy, @lindy.
My H is actually concerned about it too. I think your thoughts and feelings are legit. We are in Tennessee where there are confirmed cases but I know nothing about it - like if they traveled out of the country, etc. I'm waffling on TTC and I think we will wait until after the holidays for similar reasons you mentioned. I think talking to your OB would be good. As a whole I'm not TOO worried but I think having some peace of mind would help you (and I'll probably talk to mine at my yearly in the fall). Anyways, while I think an outbreak is unlikely here, it's very scary nevertheless.

So far all the cases in the US have been people who traveled abroad or who got it through sex with someone who traveled abroad. But now that mosquito season is about to get underway, they expect that mosquitoes here will start spreading it from people who have been infected elsewhere. Hopefully it won't be as much of a problem here due to our living conditions (e.g. screens, a/c), but small outbreaks are still possible and isolated cases probable.
eta: the majority of cases so far (people who have traveled abroad/had sex w/ people who traveled abroad) have been in Florida.
That's reassuring. I just read an article that was published today that said the cases in pregnant women are tripling in the U.S. because the government has changed how they are counting. I hadn't realized that there are cases in almost every state. Given that it's been people who have traveled or had sex with someone that has, I'm still not terribly concerned. I am definitely going to follow this and hope it fizzles out.
I know there's a blood test for it but I'm curious if you can test positive for it even after you aren't sick. My understanding is it stays in your system for awhile?
This is such a hard call. I'm a paranoid pregnant too so I definitely get it. On the one hand, there are tons of women (like your sister) who are pregnant right now in FL and throughout areas where Zika has already shown up in mosquitoes. On the other hand, it's different if it's you.
I like your plan of trying to get through 1st tri in low-mosquito season, but also you'll probably feel gross for most of 1st tri so you might not mind hiding inside no matter what the season. I finally don't have all-day nausea now that I've hit 2nd tri (it's been gone for about a week now) but now I'm hitting major food aversions, especially in the evening. And FWIW, we got Panorama results back at 12+ weeks, so not too much before I would've started telling people anyway.
I think we have a few confirmed cases here and my H is really concerned about it. He bought me like 3 bottles of spray for when I take the boys to the park.
I think talking to your OB would be a good idea. I'm so excited about this!!!
I think you're right to be concerned and talking to your doctor sounds like a good idea. I have been thinking about this a lot since we are TTC even though we don't have the mosquitos that carry it here in Colorado right now. I've already cancelled a trip we usually take with the in laws to the gulf coast in July and am thinking about not going on a family trip to Oklahoma. I think the unknown is part of what is so scary about Zika. They just don't know enough about it. I do tend to get super paranoid about things like this though! I brought it up to my doctor at a recent visit and he was super breezy about it and was like just wear bug spray if you travel and you'll be fine.
I'm in Louisiana and am planning on TTC soon so this has been on my mind too. Our plan is to start TTC in July, so I plan on being more mindful of using bug spray, wearing longer sleeves, staying inside more. Mosquitos don't typically like me, but I still get the occasional bite. My sister is currently pregnant and I've already given her the warnings.
They recommend waiting 8 weeks to get pregnant after contacting zika, as it can pass to a fetus until it is all out of the blood, which can take awhile. There are also potential risks at every stage of pregnancy with it.
This is the stuff I ended up getting. It definitely doesn't smell as bad as Off. Can't really speak to the feel, but it didn't bother me.
I like the picaridin products as well. Not as smelly and still effective. I wear flowey pants and a loose fitting long sleeve jacket when going in our backyard for any length of time since those awful striped mosquitoes are so prevalent here as well.
If I was in Florida (we don't have a huge mosquito population on this side) i would be cautious. I think waiting until at least summer starts and talking to your OB are good steps. GL!!!
Or maybe I should just get pregnant now, before Zika has a chance to spread here. (huh) Then I can go back to being celibate so H doesn't potentially infect me with his Zika-tainted semen.
I think to the extent you can plan for this, you're doing the right thing. I've been on and off the "third child" fence for months and zika is seriously one of my big reasons off (and I'd actually completely forgotten about the male transmission factor so that now scares me even more). I'm actually shocked it hasn't come to my country yet but we have dengue mosquitoes all over so it's a real concern anyhow. There's no real non-mosquito season for me but I'd certainly stay in with A/C blasting and wear loooots of bug spray whenever I went out, if I were to find myself pregnant.
Edited due to rambling. I'm obviously thinking similar thoughts so you're far from alone.
And LOL to the thought of making DH wear condoms during pregnancy. I can't wait to mention it and see his face.
