I wanted to start a chapter book with A. She saw the Princess in Black book and had to have it. But that's not what I was looking for. (Though cute) I want something she wouldn't read for a few years on her own. I've already decided we will start with Charlottes Web. I will probably also do: Trumpeter Swan and Stuart Little, Little House on the Prairie, Ramona and Beezus.
I was such a voracious reader when I was younger. I remember all the Roauld Dahl books are great, but some are dark. My mom gave all of my books away. Grrr. I'll have to start a good list.
Help me out. What are some other good read aloud chapter books?

The BFG is probably too much for the 4 yr olds but my 10 yr old and I are going to reread it so we can go see the movie this summer. I am SO FREAKING excited!

As a kid I loved all the Ramona books, Little House, anything Judy Blume, Indian in the Cupboard, Nancy Drew, Stuart Little, and The Borrowers off the top of my head. For younger chapter books, we've been reading Frog & Toad, Little Bear and Mouse Tales.
We're reading Gooseberry Park by Cynthia Rylant right now. We're both enjoying it. We've read Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little and he really liked those too. We tried a Paddington chapter book and we both lost interest. It had a lot of British terms in it that made it hard to follow.
The Little Princess movie was my absolute favorite.
I'm trying to figure out how to market them to my boys lol. My copies have been loved to death and are falling apart.
pinchofspice I forgot all about Indian in the Cupboard and Nancy Drew!!
I was born in '84 but I feel like we read a lot of "older" books. How to Eat Fried Worms is coming to mind. I remember reading children's books where there were boy twins and girl twins. Frick & Frack?? What were the girl's names? Bobsey Twins??
Also The Boxcar Children!!! I loved that series. I remember reading that myself though so I'm not sure of the age.
Mrs Piggle Wiggle, Amelia Bedelia, Anne of Green Gables, any Judy Blume. I also loved Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley Twins but don't really think I'll be reading those to H lol.

Yes! The Bobsey Twins!
I never read The Boxcar Children. Looks like i need to check it out!
Boxcar children was the first book I remember reading (on my own) and dying to read more. I was such a nerd...

I loved The Secret Garden when I was little!
In my elementary and middle school years my favorites were all the Judy Blume books, BSC, Nancy Drew, Ramona, Superfudge and Sweet Valley Twins.
I also found an entire series of The Happy Hollisters at my grandparents house and read all of them. They were very similar to Nancy Drew but the mysteries were solved by a group of siblings. They were so good.
I also went through a phase in middle school where I read a LOT of sad books..they typically involved a boy or girl befriending another child with leukemia or some other awful illness. They usually ended in a death. I feel like there were SO many books like this, did anyone else read these?? This is just word vomit btw, I'm not recommending these for the 4 year olds!
The first chapter books we read to G were the My Father's Dragon trilogy. She's actually heard them at least 3 times since DH, me, and my mom all got sucked in ourselves and read her the whole thing. Highly recommend!
We also have done Charlotte's Web, Amelia Bedelia, and multiple Jenny Linsky and the Cat Club books.
Mr. Popper's Penguins and Dr. Doolittle are on our short list to read soon, along with many mentioned above.

I used to read a lot of short story books. They were not part of a series, but same theme (horses, for me). I bought some Disney ones at Costco and W loves them so I might check out the library for some other options.

The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe Frog and Toad Together Dear Mr. Henshaw The Phantom Tollbooth Maniac Magee The Secret Garden Anne of Green Gables Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Not many of these are probably great to read yet to our kids, but I can't wait to read them later! I was/am such a bookworm. I hope they are too.
Omg monarobinson I went through a similar phase! A lot of historical fiction too where the whole family died or something horrible like that.
So many of my favorites mentioned here - Boxcar children Bobbsey twins Dr.DooLittle The Swiss Family Robinson Ramona Mrs. Piggle Wiggle Amelia Bedelia Roald Dahl The Indian in the Cupboard
These might be for a little older Chronicles of Narnia A Wrinkle in Time His Dark Materials Trilogy Harry Potter The Dark is Rising The Orphan Train
Not sure if my little boys will like these: Little House on the Prairie American Girl Doll The Babysitters club/little sister series Tamora Pierce series
