So I blew through the rest of it this weekend. OMFG. I haven't felt this way about a book in a long time. I wish I could tag Elistar, but I don't think she ever migrated over here. She's been fangirling about it for few weeks.
This is how I felt when I was done.
It's EVERYTHING I wanted. And everything I didn't know I wanted! I didn't have a hard copy of either of these since I got them from the library, but I immediately ordered them from Amazon, I HAD to have them. The first was good, this one was AMAZING.
I wanted to do a separate spoiler post, because I don't want anyone not to know about this book. And I'm going to go ahead and say it. It's BETTER than Throne of Glass. Yes, I just wrote that. On the internet. The internet lives forever.
I'm 38% into the book, and I completely agree - the first book was just ok, but THIS BOOK, this book is completely awesome so far! Also, very very not YA at the beginning. Like, it's can't be labeled YA. LOL.

I literally checked the spine to see what my library had classified it as. DEFINITELY shouldn't be YA.

Lol. I agree. In fact, I didn't even read the first one until last month because I didn't think it would be as good as TOG (I was right about that one - lol), but I was in a slump and figured I'd give it a shot. And truthfully, I wasn't even excited about the second one. The description does it no justice. But yeah, so SO GOOD!

Gah. It's sitting on my dresser right now, but I'm about a third of the way into a BIG FAT EPIC fantasy novel. Need to get through it, so I can start this!

Is it REALLY classified as YA? Because I'm rethinking this, actually. Over on CEP we've discussed several articles about how teens are watching internet porn and believe THAT is what normal, healthy sex looks like. Frankly, if my teens are going to be subjected to graphic sex regardless, I'd much prefer it to be of this variety. It's romantic and emphasizes that there's more to it than physical pleasure, that there's trust and respect inside a relationship.
So do you think my sister would be angry if I sent a copy to my 15 year old niece? Lol.
I do think often when reading young adult novels how much sex is appropriate and how graphic. I've certainly read romance novels that are 1000 times more graphic and read YA that insinuates, as in they both wake up next to each other kind of thing.
If we're talking about what I think is considered appropriate for a teenager, I'm not sure. Would I want my kid reading it? I can't tell if I'm hesitant because MY BABY! or if I truly believe that teenagers can handle it. OR could they handle it better, because like you said, it teaches valuable lessons about intimacy.
I do feel like there's some sort of checklist on what's deemed appropriate in YA book somewhere in the publishing house. Like if body parts are described and the scene lasts longer than a paragraph and there's actual description of penetration that they are typically not in YA books so it surprised me.
I would love to have a discussion on what SHOULD be appropriate vs what actual YA content is. I think more than what's currently "acceptable". While there's a place for the Stephanie Meyer fade to black, it's just not realistic for most kids who are having sex in high school.
