When did you find yours (i.e. How long from the time you started looking to the time they started working) and how did you find them? What's your arrangement (like hours/day, flexible time)?
I personally haven't done this but my good friend (about an hour north of DC) used care.com.
I am starting to look for a sitter to use in the evenings to pick up the kids from school, bring them home and feed them dinner. Today, I asked the director of their school for recommendations, I am mentioning in to other parents, I plan to post on next door, post on my local moms group board, and then hit care.com.

We found ours about 2 months before she started. I used the local multiples group to find ours. It is a different situation because she works for us and another family, we just have schedules that make this work.
She works from 8-2:30 everyday, since she picks up the other familiy's kids from pre-school after she leaves our house.
She gets 5 days of vacation time of her choice, plus holidays and paid time off when we go on vacation. We've been fairly flexible when she has needed to take her own kids to dr. Appointments and things. She usually makes up the time.
Are you on your local moms list serve? MOTH is mine but I'm fairly certain there is a NOVA moms list serve and one for MoCo too. These are excellent places to start.
I started a month before. Used care.com (and background checks from there). We have her for 25 hours a week. Her general schedule is 9-2 or 9:30-2:30. I am okay with her being a few minutes late most days as I think it's just her personality and I think makes things easier for her. I WFH and BF, so right now I have more hands on time than I'd like but as he gets older that will change. So during the time she's not with him she does things around the house. We pay her a set amount weekly, regardless of how little we use her and would pay her extra if we ever went over. I would say in the 2 months we've been using her she under on hours about 50% of the time. We also pay holidays. We are flexible when she has appts. This is unheard of for our area but we wanted to do it like that to treat her well.
