I am shocked every time I hear things like this. First off, who still thinks like that much less thinks it's appropriate to say? Second, it's a car. If you're really in to cars, regardless of gender, you've done your research. If you're not in to cars you have an idea and want to do a few test drives. It's not 1910. You don't need to know how to crank the engine.
When we bought my last car, the guy tried to be equal with H and me, but you could see his attention shift as negotiations continued. He tried to tell H they don't negotiate their prices, so they price accordingly. That info wasn't posted anywhere on their website. I wish I could have gotten a photo of his jaw dropping when I walked. We got a call the next day they were willing to meet our price.
did you threaten to walk? Betcha the sale is more important than the agreement.
my last company would have let the person walk. The only time they don't is if the sales manager/finance person accidentally misses the signature on the contract (1 of the 11 customer signatures on that paper) and they've already delivered the vehicle. I've only seen that happen once.
Then they deserve to lose business. The free market.
We spent 6 months last year renovating our house. H isn't a native speaker and I'm a woman. Imagine how patronizing builders get...
Unfortunately for them H is in the business and I help out with the paperwork so I know most of the terms, which means it's usually nipped in the bud at first meeting when they try to mansplain something and I reply using the correct/technical vocabulary.
I told DH the last time we were buying that every car dealer needs a woman on staff to sell to women. You know, since they clearly don't want to stop being sexist idiots.

out of all the things, this is the least likely scenario they'll lose business on.

This shit is why I have zero regrets about test driving cars at dealerships and then using AAA car buying service to take delivery of a vehicle. If you don't know, it's awesome. You call their 800 number, tell them what you want (new or used!), specs, three color picks, and they find the car, negotiate the price, deliver it to your house or work, and even haul off your old car and give you KBBV for it. Paperwork takes 15 minutes max.
I cosigned on my sister's first new car last year because she had no credit. The Nissan people were awful to us. I'm pretty sure they thought we were a lesbian couple which makes me even more angry because they were sexist AND homophobic. No one would help us for a good 15 minutes and they weren't doing anything else. They finally sent a girl to help us and it was her first day and she had had no training. No one else was even doing anything, they just didn't want to help us or their new female staff person.
The guy at Honda was awesome and I would have felt bad buying the car on AAA after how helpful he was but my sister didn't love the car. I've always had good experiences at my Hyundai dealership in both the sales and service department. I think they are still trying to shed the "cheap car" image so they go above and beyond.
