If ever there were a moment for Republicans to jump off the Trump train, now would be as good of a time, according to South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham.
Graham wants fellow Republicans who have endorsed Donald Trump to take it all back in the wake of his repeated claims that Judge Gonzalo Curiel's heritage make him unfit to preside over lawsuits against him. Story Continued Below
“This is the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy,” Graham told The New York Times. “If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this is probably it,” he added. “There’ll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary.”
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough sounded a similar note on "Morning Joe" earlier Tuesday, remarking that senators running for re-election could be forced to reevaluate their stated support of Trump as the party's nominee if he continues to make comments like the ones about Curiel.
"We may be having a two-step process," Scarborough said. "If Trump continues to double down, at some point — for people like Kelly [Ayotte], Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, [Rob] Portman in Ohio — they're not going to be able to endorse a guy that makes racist statements about people born in Indiana."
Vulnerable Republican Senate incumbents have raced to distance themselves from Trump’s rhetoric despite maintaining that they will support him as the party’s nominee.
Ayotte told NBC News on Monday that Trump’s comments are “offensive and wrong, and he should retract them, while a spokesman for Johnson told the Wisconsin State Journal on Monday that the senator “disagrees” with Trump, “just as he has in the past.”
Portman told reporters last Saturday that he also disagreed with Trump’s characterization. “The judge is an American, as I’m an American and as Donald Trump is an American,” the Republican senator said, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
I get it- if you're an R you want to show that you support your party. BUT holy hell. I agree- there has to be a point where these government officials, who are supposed to be protecting the people, step up and say "whoa, wait.... he's bad news. Like, REALLY bad news. He isn't going to protect anyone other than himself.".
This has GOT to stop being about party lines. They need to start using common sense.
There's a pretty good quote of Graham's from last month I believe where in an interview he elaborated on his frustration with ideologies being held above the greater good of reality that I really liked, I'll try to find it.
I was pretty shocked to read he'd said that. Good for him. Maybe - MAYBE - if more higher ups that are widely respected within the party speak out, they can stop Trump. I was also glad to see that Ryan spoke out.
Ya know, for someone I disagree with on so many issues, he's becoming a senator I respect.
I feel like he's an old-school throwback to the days of conservatives being intellectuals and not unwilling to compromise/be reasoned with. I disagree with him on pretty much everything, but I've watched a number of MTP and other interviews where I was very impressed with his pragmatism.
I like give-no-fucks Lindsay more and more.
Did you see where he made a video of smashing his cell phone after Donald Trump gave his number out at a rally?
I was pretty shocked to read he'd said that. Good for him. Maybe - MAYBE - if more higher ups that are widely respected within the party speak out, they can stop Trump. I was also glad to see that Ryan spoke out.
But didn't he also say that he and others should support him as the nominee?
.... “There’ll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary.”
...
This is what I've been waiting to hear Rs say. Any R at all. They're all "We have to get behind our party nominee." "We have to put the good of the party first." No. No you don't. How about putting our future and our children's futures and their children's futures first?
